i think beckith's gem has a more well defined margin or at least more clean one color on the margin. where as this one has this red veins mixed in with the border. and the dark red is in blotches and much less pronounced.
i thought may be it is 'florida inferno' or 'bronze pagoda'? they both have red veining diffused thru the margin.
this pic here looks close:

I vote with Allison for Beckwith's Gem. This Beckwith's Gem (photo below) grew here in shade so it would appear darker than the one by the original poster, obviously taken in full sun where they do fade out quite a bit - sometimes to the point of hardly being recognizable.

it's in partial, not full sun. i know it does look faded, but if you look close - i think it's natural coloration. i have another pic - one of the plants seemed to be slightly darker.

Collage of a cropped version of your photo and my Beckwith's Gem. I still vote with Allison (the Coleus Queen) for Beckwith's Gem.

LOL! Can you tell I didn't preview? I hope this is the correct one.

I just previewed and it is the right one. The new leaves on each are identical. The older leaves on the right match the original photo submitted.

i am stil not convinced. bethwick's gem has so much burgundy, while mine has vary little. i know how coleus changes depending on light levels. but considering how few differences are between some of the varieties, i think mine looks different enough to be smth else.
any other suggestion at all?

did you even look at 'bronze pagoda' link?
it is not sun-bleached. it is just light-colored 'water-color' margin. i saw beckwith's gem today grown in shadier position - it has green spots and yellow margin is nowhere as wide as mine (just like i saw in other pics). mine has no green at all. but it must be smth readily available - it's in a very large bed around 'village style open mall area'. that is part shaded in PA - so the sun is not as strong as you might believe it to be, lets say, in georgia or carolinas.

nope, my mind is not made up at all. but i've looked thru a lot of images and i think there are other options.
and i would like to discuss it some more.
i have this on camcorder too - i'll try to extract better footage.
i think you're giving up too soon ;).

i could not find the footage, but i confirmed that the bed is shaded from hot afternoon sun by a large tree - so am convinced that the yellow border is not sun-bleached , but by design.
quite by accident, while i was searching for smth else i came upon this variety: stained glass series by Dummen (?) - 'raspberry tart'. it has exactly darker burgundy blotches on bright pink middle like mine. absolutely no green and a wide yellowish border. while even in our DB most pics of bethwick's show green spots and large dark burgundy area.
here's two links for nurseries that had it:
http://loghouseplants.com/plan...
http://springtrials.org/page.c...
what do you think of that?
and while i was doing all this i found a fantastic local nursery in NJ - growing over 200 varieties of coleus, less then 1 hour from me by car: atlock farms.
there was an article about it in washington post even!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/... article about atlock farms.
it's a bit old, so i'll need to verify that they are still there, but i am hoping to visit even this fall, may be next week or two. if so - i'll be sure to post a report.
