Hi. I attended a lecture yesterday about growing peonies from seeds. The lecturer was Bob Johnson who is a peony hybridizer and is currently working in conjunction with Adelman peonies. Anyone interested in obtaining the literature that Bob provided at the lecture, please email me and I will send you the scanned copies of the material. It is very interesting and informative!

As a bonus at the lecture, Bob gave out some peony seeds for us to try. I got a few that I am really excited about. I got 5 seeds from a cross of Tenufolia Plena and Tenufolia Rosea, 2 seeds from Molly the Witch specie, and 5 seeds from the Peregrine Specie. I also got some tree peony seeds and seeds from another hybridizer seedlings.

I sent you the file, Liz. I am hopeful to be able to grow these species seeds successfully and get to see them flowered. The seed seminar was great but the reality is that it takes at least 5 years before the plant is established and form flowers.

Planting from seed is definitely an investment in time, huh? But you'll have something that is unique to just your garden unless you decided to divide it. I think it's worth the time. Thanks for forwarding it!

Yes, thank you!
Now, I know what I am doing wrong.
I need to arrange for a warmer place, and then just chill them....not freeze them.

It is a PDF file. I will need your email address to send it as an attachment, Bob Johnson's technique for growing peony from seeds in the shortest amount of time. If you want to do it simply, you can just plant the seeds in your garden in early summer and they should sprout the following spring if the seeds are good.

That's what I did! I cut the bottom out of several 3 gallon pots and planted them in a shady garden bed where I've had volunteer peony seedlings before. Put the seeds out mid-summer and several came up this spring. It'll be another 5 or 6 years before I know if I'll get anything pretty out of it, though.

Indeed it is an investment in time. I started tree peonies from seed four winters ago and thought they may bloom this year, but they didn't yet. Hopefully by next year. The plants look nice and sturdy, just no blossom yet.

Hi Kousa,

I am from Chicago il. I know I have noticed your post very late. Can you please guide me to start peony plantation at my front yard?

Let me know about your experience with both seeds and roots. I would appreciate, if you can share the location where I can get seeds of different peonies.

Thanks
Madhu
