One of my favorites! I usually grow these every year, I just love the way a small plant covers perhaps a square yard by the end of the season and seed themselves around, they thrive in hot sun and dry conditions yet don't mind if it's wet as long as the soil is well drained, nothing seems to eat or bother them. A truly great addition to the border or in a tub, fantastic plant! Lovey dubby Seed I find hard to harvest though, any tips?

I haven't had any seeds germinate either Jon. I love it so much and wish seeds would work but as I've talked to serious growers, they admit they do better with stem cuttings too. A few years ago, I think it was 2009, we had a mild winter and by late spring, purslane was popping up in places in my garden. Same with a pot I had that I over winterd inside.

The Japanese wild purslane.

Grows in cracks in tarmac and concrete or rocks, it don't like open ground, perhaps something to learn here about this plants natural habitat.

My photo is very misleading *Blush* It is in fact a flat surface, the pink blocks are the sidewalk and the dark area someones driveway.

I found some purslane plants at the nursery this week. Other than large hanging baskets, they mostly had the round small pots that were in those plastic pot holders that have the round plants right up against each other. Many of the branches were long and the plant branches had all gotten tangled up with the other plants. I was trying to get a couple of plants out and had a lot of difficulty avoiding breaking the branches. Finally I got two out, breaking as few branches as possible, then found a single 4" pot of purslane. Later, as I was checking out, the cashier carelessly grabbed the round purslane pots out of the cardboard box of plants...breaking several more purslane branches! I was NOT a happy camper! Nevertheless, I took them home and later stuck the branches into pots, hoping they'd root. Ah well, the two plants will recover!

Amazing they already have purslane there Linda! Hurray!
I always stuck the pieces that break off in the dirt and they took hold great with daily water if it's too dry. Yes, like Vicki asked, what colors?

Yes, they get there early. The labels on the two round pots said rose, but they don't look like what I think of as rose. Will take pics when the drippy/cloudy weather lets up enough for it to bloom. I'm grateful for any amount of moisture...inches would be good in this drought, but so far a little over 1/4 inch.

Actually it says Rio, Purslane, Rose...separate lines. The two larger pots didn't bloom today, but here's the second kind that did bloom. I was just going to get the larger ones at the nursery (thought they had no 4" pots), but then I noticed they had a single 4" pot of purslalne, no label, flowers closed, but I got it anyway. It turned out to be a nice color!
