I'm about to git me some squirrels. I set out three pottted daylilies and a tray of new cuke seeds today and this evening all of the seeds had been dug out and the green tops eaten off of my daylilies. G-r-r-r-r-r.

We live in the woods, and have carted off several of the little terrorists, to the other side of the lake! They have been busy digging holes in my flower beds. They really can't resist peanut butter!

H-m-m-m, peanut butter eh? Gotta go get me a trap. Thanks.

We've taken 17 to the "farm" since Xmas and so far haven't had another show up. For Xmas, I got a small squirrel trap from Harbor Freight! We set it and watched the squirrel go in, eat, trip the lever, and turn around to open the door and leave. We watched this over and over. Then we decided to use our "Have a Heart" raccoon trap. Same story, only they didn't trip the lever. Sooooo we tied a string to the lever and threaded it into the house thru the door. Finally, bye, bye....squirrels. Only downside is transporting them every time......far away.

Tractor Supply usually has a good supply of traps. No shipping charges when you go there!

Several years ago over at my Mom's a fiesty (sp) little squirrel stole my almost ripened daylily seedpods that I so carefully had hybridized, tagged, and was waiting to harvest....only the little sucker got there first. I was so mad at the little thief! He left the opened seedpod with tag still on it laying right where he ate the seeds.

They haven't bothered my daylilies here, but they eat the seeds out of all of my pine cones and throw what looks like a "cob" down on the ground. Sometimes they must have a "party" because there's no way one squirrel could eat that many pine cone seeds at one sitting!

Tex, I'm afraid that would put me over the edge. I've been thinking about getting a good hard shooting BB gun or pellet gun. It probably wouldn't kill them, but it might make them think twice before they showed up around here again. Since I'm in town, I can't shoot firearms. My dog loves to chase them, but seldom catches one. But he sure scatters them when he goes outside.

Love that picture Bubbles! I have the opposite problem with the squirrels who live in our trees - they plant things in our garden. My friend about 4 doors away feeds them peanuts, which they then bring and "plant" in my pots and flower beds. I'm always finding peanut plants sprouting where something else was meant to be. That means they're disturbing other seeds that might be in there, but at least they're not eating those.

I thought we were thru, but he just caught #18.....and now has to relocate him in the rain. I have a photo of my compost pile with a caladium coming out of it. I know I didn't plant it there!

Okay, sorry....never mind about the snakes.
Back to squirrels: my property has several underground "caves" called karsts which provide homes for the black rock squirrels. While they live underground, they are able to climb trees if necessary. And they are adept at stealing tomatoes from the garden! I'm willing to share a few because they're entertaining to watch.

I think I've only seen those once when I was hiking out in the hill country west of Austin. I don't have them here, I think. Lots and lots of red tree squirrels, though. Those do look cool!

We had one of those running the fenceline behind our house. It was big! I showed it to DH and told him it was payback for all the squirrels we've caught and released in other places. Someone decided to release squirrels they'd caught into our greenbelt! I'd never seen one before.
