I got this croton last Nov 2014, actually got two of them for a $1.00 each. Since it was my first time to grow them, I was trying to test how far along it can stay outdoors. The one that was repotted to a clay pot did not make it. Almost lost the other one too, thankfully I got to them in time and kept both indoors for the rest of winter, but the one in the clay pot was more far along with the cold damage so I lost it.

The remaining one, has been repotted outdoors in early March 2015:

This April 2015, doing good, Spring so welcome. It may have gotten a bit cooler this week, our overnights this week has dipped to the mid to high 40's, but daytime gets warmer at the low 60's to mid 70's. We had some rain yesterday, which is so good for it! As our drought conditions here is making things really dry, I occasionally do spray misting on the leaves too.

What's the secret to keeping them happy? Are they wet feet and bright light?

I find they like warm temps range 70F to 85F, bright light, not too wet feet, but they certainly appreciate daily leaf misting. Our area is just so dry so misting helps. Am still getting to know the plant, so far it is in that shady corner outdoor, will have to see how it handles the triple digits.

That looks great Tarev. I killed my dollar one that I got at Lowes. It kept drying out and I needed to repot it and I never got around to it and it was dry too long. What did I do.........Was at Lowes last week and they had a big one in a hanging pot for 1.00 and of course I purchased it. Rolling on the floor laughing We are close to summer so I can keep it alive until it can go outside then mother nature can take care of it.

Yes and I was even excited that it was bigger. At least if it dies I will have a nice hanging pot for something else.

I went outside to get a quick pic for you and before I put it outside last week I put 3 surprise lily bubs in the pot that I had picked up at the dollar store and one of them is blooming. Not bad for a dollar store bulb.

Thank you Tarev. I cannot wait for summer so it can color up. It is the one that looks like a colorful spider plant. I killed all my spiderplants when my DH got sick this Fall I forgot they were hanging on the side of the house so they are dead. I am going to pick up some and put them in the pot with this croton.

Photo updates of my bargain croton..our heat wave temps are to its liking, as long as in shade and leaves getting misted. I also have that little clay turtle decor that holds water, it helps keep moisture at the root zone.

The other plant in the glass container is my carnivore, Drosera, parking it by the croton plant so it can hopefully catch some gnats flying around there.

tarev: Your Codiaeum is looking great! They do love heat and humidity ... they're grown as shrubs in the landscape down here in Florida.

Cinta: Your pretty surprise lily sure looks like Pink Rain Lily (Zephyranthes minuta)

LOL, I've lived in the Southeast my entire life so I have no clue what it must be like to live in such a dry climate. I think I'd have to have a constant misting system for the plants ... and me! Green Grin!

It may drop all it's leaves during the winter months but if you can keep it warm and moist it might re-foliate in the spring.
