I happened to be standing in line at my Lowes when they changed the signs from 50% off to 75% off. My little car was so full of goodies that I barely had room to do my happy dance!
I bought trees, sedum, hostas, roses, butterfly bushes (at $1 each!), salvia, lavender, veronica, pansies, perovskia, delosperma, hibiscus and crepe myrtles! And all were in good shape. And all are now planted.
Even the large indoor tropicals were on sale! I think the only thing they excluded were the mums and bulbs.
People in zone 5 will probably see this sale in the coming week.

I happened to be right near a Lowe's today so I popped my head in and snagged a eunymous from them for under $5 (normally about $19). It looks great and I'm excited about it. They were already pretty picked over, though. Fortunately, it's not my closest Lowe's, so maybe I'll try the one near me tomorrow.

Best I can get in St. Joseph, MO is 50 % off. I did pick up a somewhat sad looking Blue Muffin viburnum for $ 3 . Just needs some TLC. I love to buy their 20 - 30 $ plants for 2 or 3 $. Earlier got a Dappled Willow for 1 $. Trimmed up a bit, set in bucket of water for 24 hours and in 2 weeks it looked great.

@CindiKS - Wichita is Zone 7? Really?

@DavildLMo for a few years, we got bumped up to 7, now I see the latest maps have us back in 6, so I don't know anymore. The stores stock as if we are 7--Photinias started appearing in Lowes several years ago.

I go by a zone lower than the new guide. Most of the time the temps do fall in the upper zone, but then that low temp for a few days/weeks every couple of years, that is enough to kill off those plants. Year before last we had a very cold winter here, which is really typical. So whoever's idea it was to change up the zones, dumb IMO

Lowes' tags, good to look up the plant first, because most things almost always get bigger than the tag says.

Lowes stocks all sorts of things that are out of zone. In some cases WAY out of zone. And local help, in my experience know nothing. Best to always check carefully. Now I admit that I am a zone pusher and seem to have a micro climate. I am technically 5B, but have done ok with lots of Zone 6 stuff.

What irks me is them selling stuff that is tagged for Zone 9 or higher and they give no indication of this. Buy hey - the front of the tag says Perennial. :-)

My Lowes is still not 75 % off.

@DavidLMO ....seeing a plant labeled as full sun here in the Phoenix area is not the same as perhaps elsewhere. It is sure disaster to go with that label and no knowledge of the plant. We WANT to believe it, but it is just not so!

Have not seen a general markdown in plant prices at Lowes here...just the usual markdowns. Have rescued a few gerberas, gazanias and an angelonia for $1 each that just needed a little tlc. They did have a huge markdown of pots a while back.

Around here, Lowe's has fantastic clearance plants all year, it seems. I remember at the beginning of the season they had racks and racks full of less-than-perfect plants that were marked down HEAVILY. It just takes a person with an ounce of confidence in their gardening skills to grab some great deals. Home Depot's clearance rack was, unfortunately, far more sparse. I can't blame them, though, I have to imagine Lowe's is losing their shirts on all of the mark-down items...unless they are making bookoo (sp?) bucks on accompanying supplies.

My home depot does not seem to have as good a selection as lowes.

And, they do not consistently water the plants that they have.

So, i do not usually shop there.

our HD never puts anything on clearance. I wondered if they donate those plants to local community gardens, habitat for humanity ect. I noticed some plants one day for sale at the Re-store, they had to be donated from somewhere. One day I was at WM and they had lots of marked down items, (tables of stuff), next day they were all gone, completely cleaned out. So they had to of did something w all of it

FrillyLily, you just reminded me that I purchased a mark-down Easter Lily early this season at WalMart (that was on a giant table of post-Easter markdown easter lilies) and I don't recall what I did with it! I wonder if it died and I threw it out? I'm racking my brain trying to remember...

If they do donate the plants, that's a pretty noble cause. Kudos to them.

Most of the plants sold at the big boxes now do so via what is called passed thru billing. Walmart, Lowes, HD etc only pay when the plant goes thru a cash register. They make less fer sure, but the wholesaler - not the box has the risk if the plants perish.

Handy hint for rescue plants. Place them in a bucket of water overnight so that they are REALLY watered. EG - for a gallon pot, I sit so that water comes up at least half way. I call it my Friends of Plants/Plant Rescue League (TM).

Obviously - don't do this for everything I have had great success doing so for plants that appear to be on deaths door.

Ours has clearance racks almost year-round, too. It's the first place that I stop when I go to Lowe's...or if I'm near Lowe's, or passing by Lowe's, etc. I wonder if the big garden-center-wide sales may be a northern thing. I know some garden centers completely shut down for the winter. They continue to sell plants here all year. They do tend to mark down a lot of things right before the Christmas tree shipment comes in.

Still, I may try to go by there soon and see if there are any good sales going on.

David is right about the way plants are sold at the big box stores. At HD, the wholesaler comes in and takes away any unsold plants. I guess they just throw them away.

Our stores do the passed through billing also. That means that some plants get inventoried and dumped into a fenced-in dumpster so the store gets credit for them from the unfortunate wholesaler. I tried hard to get a HD to sell me some plants last week that were perfectly good, just slightly wilted. Nope. They were going to a dumpster and I wasn't allowed to dumpster dive. The store was making room for mums. Sometimes, (for example Bonnie Plants) the wholesaler comes and takes the plants back. That's how whole racks disappear overnight, Frilly. I get almost the same visceral feeling seeing plants in a dumpster as I do when I see those Humane Society ads on tv.
