Hi,
I live in Southern Ontario, north of Belleville. Today I found a plant I have never seen before. It has orange berries, longer than they are wide growing off the stem in the leaf nodes. Each berry has four little leaves growing from it. I think the berries are actually plantlets. The plant is laying over, but still green. The leaves are pretty much the same shape as an elm leaf. I didn't disturb it because it looked rather nice. Does anyone know what it is? Thanks.
Larry

Hi Larry and welcome to ATP Welcome!

If you could possibly get a picture and post it, that will help a lot to ID your plant. A close-up of the orange berry things, and a shot of the whole plant would be best.

How big is the plant, and where (sun or shade, etc.) is it growing?

I was 'way out in the forest and won't be in the area for a few days again. The plant was bent over, but still alive. I'd say it would be about 4 feet tall standing up, growing in a forested area. The berries, plantlets; whatever they are are about the colour of a cape gooseberry and about the size and shape of an olive pit. The little leaves looked like shoots of grass and appeared to grow right out of the the berry; evenly spaced around the top. I'll try to take a camera if I get back out to the same area. Thanks.

The plant is protected in some states.
If you cannot harvest seeds locally they can be purchased.

I'm going with the Horse Gentian, Feverwort, Triosteum perfoliatum thing. I actually did think the berries looked like coffee beans.

Welcome! Have not seen this plant in years, but it does have some odd characteristics. Looks like the ID above nailed it.
