Hello friends in the Amaryllis forum. Its that time again in the Northern Hemisphere to start planning and dreaming about fall bulb orders. I have no more space in the ground for any more bulbs. However, I am always looking for the new and exciting cultivars which will end up in a pot outside. Royal Colors has its website up and running. A few catalogs are starting to arrive. Has anyone started thinking about new orders?

Here is a brand new one:

Sweet Potato Pie - I have too many bulbs already, but I am thinking of getting it anyway. And it is on sale right now. What do you think about it @bsharf?

Not as expensive as a Mandonii bulb though. I paid an arm and a leg for 10 seeds. because you can't even find any of those bulbs for sale.

I also saw that Sweet Potato Pie in the Dutch Gardens catalog. My problem was the price. It was $25 plus at least $12 for shipping. That is a big risk for me in not having dealt with that company before. Is the bulb going to be healthy and am I really getting the proper bulb, not a unknown substitution. I am hoping that Sweet Potato Pie will show up somewhere else at a slightly less ridiculous price.

Well, I guess I will be able to let you know about that. Whistling I took the plunge and ordered it. I was swayed because they listed it on emaryllis.com and I trust that site, and Bill who runs it. He seems pretty watchful of new bulbs and seems to wait until he endorses something. But I did have to think about it for a week because yes, I think the price and shipping are both way to much. I guess i will find out if I wasted my money or not. Will let you know.

I did check out emaryllis.com and he did order Sweet Potato Pie. That's a good enough recommendation for me. I held out for two weeks, but today I did order it from Dutch Gardens, since it may turn out to be an exclusive for them. I also put in an order to Royal Colors for Amadeus, Striped Amadeus, Daphne, Dynasty and Sofia. In October, RC will have more cultivars listed on their website. White Flower Farms hasn't put anything up yet on their website. So far, haven't seen anything else on other websites to tempt me.

Just checked out Royal Colors - I like Striped Amadeus kind of like Blossom Peacock also. If only I had enough room for ALL of them. I crossed Picotee x Naranja last winter. Need to wait the 3 years until they bloom, and then need to cross them again with themselves to get the F2 generation to see what the possibilities are. Such a LONG wait!

According to emaryllis.com, He did get a Sweet Potato Pie from Dutch Gardens which has bloomed. He believes that it will turn out to be identical to a bulb sold by Royal Colors as Terra Mystica. Check out the photo on the emaryllis com website.

Yeah, I saw he said that - I have also corresponded with him. dutchgardens.com will not refund my money - they say I waited too long to return my bulb -- ???? They must mean the substitute bulb they sent me. Which I didn ot return because I was talking back and forthwiththem about them sending me the wrong bulb, which they kept saying they were going to correct. I now have a voucher from them to buy a NEW bulb - but they do not coarry anything anything I want - except for the Sweet Potato, which they are out of. Sighing! So I have no idea what I should use my voucher for. Thumbs down
Perhaps I will buy a Terra Mystica from Royal Colors - will need to check and see if they have any in stock. I could have delt with the problems from dutchgardens had they just been upfront with me and actually communicated with me. Grumbling

To Jmorth: That is a beautiful collection blooming. The Lemon Sorbet is so different. I have a collection of 5 types, but am getting a very late start this year. Hopefully they'll be blooming for Valentine's Day. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year! 🍸

@jmorth - Love the Lemon Sorbet. And what is the Ambiance potted in? Looks like very large caviar.

A few days ago I was brave enough to enter my garage, home of various and ugly rodents. (I always pound on the door before opening it so any critter will run away.) I had forgotten that I put some pots of bulbs in there. Probably did it when we had our fun little freeze. So there were 3 pots of paperwhites, including one that had started blooming. And a couple of unknown Amaryllis bulbs in paper bags. I'd even stashed a pink salvia greggii that had never made it into the ground in time. But it's looking good, considering.

Back to the Amaryllis. They're smallish but growing some nice roots. I'm thinking I should pot them up and bring them in from the cold. (garage is dark and unheated.) Opinions anyone?

If your amaryllis bulbs are growing roots, bring them in and pot them up. With any luck they might bloom this winter.

My amaryllis haven't bloomed in months, but now I am getting some very.....odd....buds.

I have never seen this happen before. It looks like the bulb is splitting and, at the same time, producing a bunch of scapes that aren't growing, so the buds are very nearly coming directly out of the bulb. I thought they might get taller, but the bud color is getting richer and they have hardly grown in the last several days.

Has anyone else ever seen this before? :

How weird. Love that third photo. I had one that was was extremely short, but not quite that short - maybe a 3" stem? I read once, but this had to do with Hyacinths, that a warm spell during the cool resting period can cause short stems. Perhaps it is the same thing? Just speculating. But still, I really like that third photo! I tip my hat to you.
