I love the landscape/multi plant photos that folks submit, but wonder why more of them don't include any labels? Perhaps add a gentle reminder to do so? I especially love when I am researching a plant to see one or more actual photos of the plant in situ with other plants around it. So helpful.

I quit trying to label the plants on my pictures because it just wouldn't work correctly. I would draw the border around the plant, label it, and then when I would check the label it often would be somewhere else on the photo. I would delete it and try again and was only successful part of the time. It became frustrating so I gave up. It may well have been something I was doing wrong but Shrug! Perhaps I should not add any more photos til I figure out what I am doing that doesn't work.

I heard a few reports about people having problems labeling plants but I have not been able to replicate the problem (which means I can't fix it). Every time I try it, it works perfectly for me. One day I'll just need to sit down and completely rewrite how that part works (since that's really the only way I know to fix a bug that I can't experience myself.)

I had some problems with it as well. Seems like the label you make floats off you intended plant but the funny thing is it doesn't happen every time.

I've added only one landscape plant. That was two and a half years ago. I became so frustrated that @eclayne popped in and offered to help. If not for Evan's patient assistance, there wouldn't be even one landscape photo of mine.
I grow lots of plants in pots, due to our rocky limestone. This summer, I had multiple pots filled with asst. tropicals. I didn't even attempt to add them due to my frustrating first effort.

I have had difficulties from time to time with labeling as well. Sometimes I draw the box around, but it won't stay formed, and the box for naming doesn't come up. I then withdraw from there, cancel, and come back and try again.

I was looking at Landscape Photos of @springcolor tonight, since I'd had a Thumbs up for my latest Landscape Photo (# 5582) from her, (Thanks Julia), and I noticed that her Landscape Photo #1691, didn't have labels at the top. When I scrolled down, looking at the photo, there were boxes with names for Helenium Autumnale and Heliopsis Lorraine sunshine. Just now, in typing this up, I saw a grey line under Lorraine - so I looked it up in the Database, and it is spelled Loraine Sunshine. An interesting anomaly. Confused

While we're on this labeling topic, I've wondered why we can't see the Landscape Photo # at the top of the picture. The only way I've seen it, is if I click on the number of Thumbs Up it has received. It does appear in that window. If it hasn't received a Thumbs Up yet, you have to give it one, and then click on the (1): and then it will appear! Another anomaly.

no labeling at all is not an issue really, but wrong labeling is bad of course. I too would like to see more ID for plants in photos in general.

Paul, you can leave them up because once we fix the labeling issue, then you or we can go back and label older photos that have no labels.

I've never had any problem with the labels, so didn't know that was an issue. Once it has been resolved, it would be very helpful if folks could go back and add labels. Perhaps a community note on the home page as a reminder?

Against my better judgement I decided to try adding 2 more photos with labels. The first one worked well but when I tried to delete an incorrect tag it did not work.. When I did the second one the label on the Hoya shifted to the left. I have tried to delete it several times with no success and added a generic tag which stayed in the right place. This is the problem which I have been having. Discouraging. I may delete both.......

I too have had similar problems, one the squared areas moved of it's own violation shifting to the left; then it wouldn't go away. I put another box over it.
If you activate the picture, you can see the ghost box momentarily. The post in question is my last multi submission - lily, Loraine Sunshine and poppy.
The ghost square is inside the Loraine Sunshine square.
Nothing that's been done can ever be changed.

I tried to label one of the pictures that is now on the screen and the box moved to the left and I couldn't delete it. Gave up....

If and when you rework the landscape photos (which are regularly but not consistently problematic for me to label), it sure would be nice if you could grab the date of the photo (and/or include a text box to input this info) like the photos for the database. It makes a difference to me to know the date one of these was taken. I tip my hat to you.

I would like to somehow encourage folks to start a discussion about their landscape photos - date taken, where (their own garden or somewhere else), description of siting (full sun, part shade, etc.), how old the planting is, and any other useful information. Perhaps a pop-up could happen which the submitting person could either use to add more information, or just ignore. I really find landscape photos helpful when researching a plant, but that really is dependent on the photo being properly labeled so it shows up in the database under each featured plant. Hopefully, when this issue is resolved folks will take the time to go back and label their landscape photos. To me, an unlabeled landscape photo is just a flash of eye candy that I see when I open the site, but likely will never see again.

Deb, I hope you don't mind me piggybacking on your idea, but I had a thought about landscape photos recently, too. I've only ever submitted two, mostly because I don't always have the info about each plant so that I can label it. But when I have, the boxes worked fine for me. Granted, that was only twice!

Now, please tell me if I just missed it, but is there a part where we can add a caption like we do to regular photos? The last landscape photo I submitted was taken at Bok Tower Gardens and I wanted to be able to say that somewhere. I think it would be helpful for folks like Deb to know a little about the photo. Granted, it's pretty obvious that some are taken at public gardens or nurseries. But I'd like to be able to state if it's my garden, or a preserve so that folks like Deb can see how plants grow in their natural habitat vs. how I use them in my garden (I have a lot of natives). I just think it would be nice to have at least the location and caption options like we have on the regular photos. My two cents!

Mellie, if you open your landscape photo and scroll below it, there is a spot to start a discussion. I think this is the perfect spot for the photographer to begin a conversation by stating where the photo was taken, and then add more detailed information in the body of the comment. Folks can then ask more questions, or just add to the thread with whatever their reaction is to the photo. I think it would be nice if the program somehow prompted people to do so. Here is one example of a landscape photo I submitted with some information on the siting, which then sparked some further discussion about some of the plants.

I have only posted 10 landscape photos and will make a point to go back and add a comment to those I have not yet done so with.

I agree that having a caption box that displays under the photo would be great. Clicking on another link just to see where something was photographed is annoying. It also requires the image's poster to go through another process to post a comment, so is, therefore, less likely to get posted.
