I would like to start this discussion so we can all report our experiences of this extremely wet winter with our webby (arachnoideum) and fuzzy or downy (ciliatum) type Sempervivum before we forget what we lost and fill in the space with something else.. for instance I lost most of my PekInese, King George and Hausmanii but not Valanovski, arachnoideum tomentosum or barbatulatum Hookerii. . I'm going to have a closer look tomorrow and should have more to report.

Jo Ann, your semps were protected a little or no protection and left to tuff it out? Some people's semps are out in the open, and some people's are closer to the house or protected in some way. Were Your Perished and survivors all placed in one location?

Majority of my Semps sit in flats on the balcony. Most of my Fuzzy semps that perished had moldy and mushy leaves. They were not subjected to the rain except for occasional watering. Even then, they got leaf rot. Maybe the soil did not drain enough. Maybe the low temps or high humidity or lack of sun/too many overcast days or a combo of any of those added to their demise. Of my fuzzy semps, Downland Queen, Aymon Correvon, Engles, Oley, Titiana, and P. Zoftic, suffered but not enough that I lost all members of each. I had at least one or two survivors of each cultivar. I think I have survivors because I started doing a regular check on the semps to tweeze out the moldy leaves and add crushed rock under the rosettes

The non arach , non fuzzy semps also suffered, but won't list those.

From Kevin:
JungleShadows said:Joann,

Shirley's Joy, Ann Christy, the ciliosums and some, but not all of the cantabricums came through the winter the worst for me. Several of the Pacifics also suffered which surprised me as they were bred in this climate. Pacific Feather Power and several of the velvety Pacifics were very damaged. This was a HORRIBLE year though.

Of the pure cobwebs, Denise's Cobweb and Shampoo look very good.

I grow very few semps here, but this past winter has been really rainy and cold here. My arachs did well, lots of new babies right now. They seemed to have enjoyed our weather. I do know our lowest temps did not go below 30F much this time. Mine are just in containers, lots of chicken grit as top dressing, and though under the skies, maybe the house protected it too from the worst of the cold winds.

This last winter has had record amounts of rain. This coupled with the freezing and thawing that took place have been difficult for some of our semps. The ones that suffered the most damage still seem to have enough left to rebuild a colony.
In this thread we are talking about the fuzzy, webb or velvety types of semps.

Webbed/tufted with cilia that did well for me this winter/spring:
Aaliya
Allison
Ann Marie
Ali
Cobweb Buttons
arach f/Val Miniera
Stansfieldii
Ashes of Roses
Baronesse
Butterfly
Candy Floss
Denice's Cobweb
Duke of Windsor

Rosa Maedchen
Shauna
Silver Angel
Silver Baby
Silver Cup
Silver Fan
Silver Thaw
Silver Web

Super Dome
Vanille
Zarubianum

Webbed/tufted with cilia that have damage but are reviving:
Artist
Boule De Neige
Corsair
Opitz
Pfalzer Nebel
Shirley's Joy
Smit's Seedling

Velvety/fuzzy semps that did well:
Aymon Correvon
Hot Boyz
Bella Donna
Cleveland Morgan
Lynn's Choice
Oley
Pacific Spring Frost
Pink Puff
Soft Line

Velvety/fuzzy ones suffered greatly this winter, some will recover:

I'm not going to comment because I keep mine covered so really not good examples.
Bev, i do have a suggestion for you. If my memory is good I think your balcony has walls on both sides and I think some of the mold problem would be lack of air movement. Maybe a box fan out there. I use one in my greenhouse to move air. I could be wrong.

I think a fan might be helpful. I have much better luck when I run a fan in my greenhouse. I get less mold, and less insect problems. The insects seem to hate the air movement.

ricos said:Kevin Thanks for your input on the arachnoids and other fuzzies. I have had the same experience with Shirley's Joy. My experience has been that the more webs or cilia the plant has is in direct relation to its inability to survive the wet. My theory is that the webs and cilia hold the water next to the plant which causes it to rot or freeze and then rot. Ironically I went to look at these today to at least start a list an i got rained out Rolling on the floor laughing A huge downpour. The rest of this week is going to be pretty busy for me getting ready for the Hardy Plant Society sale on Sat and Sun. It would be so fun to see some

Just popping in for a moment.I think there is some really valuable info being presented here. Your list is amazing Lynn.
Fredegar is a very reliable winter performer for me outside in the wet. so is A. speciosum. I kept some Pacific Feather Power out of the rain this year and they are beautiful while the ones that were out in the rain are dead. It is evident to me now that my soil mix does not drain fast enough for the amount of rain that we have had this winter. (perhaps straight pea gravel might work ) Interesting to hear from the California folks that they have had the rain but not freezing temps and their "fuzzys" seem to be doing ok. Hmmm (We need an emoji for "I'm pondering that one") Did I get that right? Perhaps we will soon get some reports from places where they are just coming out from under the snow. I would sure like to go to Europe and see the species in their native habitat! Thanks everyone. I'm "over and out" till after the H.P.S.O. sale.

You should have heard me when I was calling one of our four children when they were growing up. Sometimes one of the family pet names would end up in the list. Rolling my eyes.

Not the same but being called the wrong name could be jarring...I had a young nephew bump into me once and he called me Grandpa. I realize that my facial moisturizer wasn't working for me... Sad
