Repost from the May thread:

I just saw what looked like a moth or a giant bee, sort of, but acted like a hummingbird! So I searched for "hummingbird moth" and there it is! Couldn't get a picture because it wouldn't stay still for me.

Sometimes, you can just feel blessed to see something beautiful like this. Lovey dubby

They are beautiful and amazing to see! I agree

Not too long ago I saw this caterpillar on the leaves of Virginia Creeper and was thinking it would probably become a beautiful hummingbird moth.

I was so happy today to see a black swallowtail butterfly in the veg garden, visiting some of the small volunteer dill plants -- maybe laying eggs? Quite a few years ago we had a good population of the swallowtails and their cats -- that's when I started letting dill go pretty crazy in the garden; for the past few years, it's been a rare sighting (I think since the bad winter of 2013-2014). Last year I did find a couple of the caterpillars, so I hope this is signaling a comeback! Smiling

Good Lord! The front yard is abuzz with Pipevine butterflies but they are flying around like a bunch of schizophrenics and will not stay in one place long enough for a photo....YET. I'll get them eventually. My pipevine was covered with cats so I believe this bunch to be part of that group.

"My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird — equal seekers of sweetness. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn? Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished." — Mary Oliver, from Messenger

Thanks @wildflowers Christine. It's just not sharp enough to show how gorgeous this butterfly is. He was also not cooperating in letting me get a shot and that incredible iridescent blue. I'll get him tomorrow I hope.

Black Swallowtail butterfly caterpillars eat dill , fennel and pretty much any member of the parsley / carrot family of plants.

and speaking of BST butterflies after a month of inactivity I released BST female #10 today , still 3 chrysalises left.

Visitor to the porch late last night. After a bit of research I believe it to be a Rustic Sphinx Moth (Manduca rustica). This is a very large moth.
