I just uploaded a huge update to the Plant Lists feature, and there are a number of new features available to the members:

1) You can now add a plant that does not exist in the plant database! This means that you can add your own seedlings, crosses, and other plants that for whatever reason don't exist in the DB. You can also theoretically use this to post plants for which you do not know what they are.

2) You can now post photos to your items in your list, without going through the database. When you edit a plant, you will see a button to upload a photo. Just upload as many as you want and they will automatically be added to your list. Photos posted through this area will be the default used when showing the thumbnail in your main list view.

3) Each plant in your list now has its own page that people can click on to view all the details and photos you've posted for it. To see this in action, check out my list. The top item is a crepe myrtle seedling. Click on the binoculars icon under the name to view that plant's page.

4) Adding a new plant has been greatly simplified. When you are in your list and click on "Add a plant to your list" you are taken to a nice easy form where you can add your plant. It has been designed with an eye toward ease of use for all members of every skill level.

There are other small changes and improvements you'll notice here and there.

This is phase 1 in a major update to the site. The next planned update (not sure when it'll come) will further extend this feature to allow other people to comment on your plants, allow weed and plant identification assistance from other members, and allow proposals from other members to link unlinked plants to the database.

Sounds great! I look forward to investigating all these new changes. Thanks.

I definitely see a 'winter project' in my future to add plant photos. Am I correct in assuming that the first loaded personal photo will be the thumbnail for my personal list? I previously had uploaded photos into the main database and then copied those links into the comment section of my list - should I delete these and instead just upload direct into my list for a cleaner look?

I really like the sound of some of these changes. I'm going straight to my plant list to check it out!

I have been looking forward to this for some time. The timing couldn't be better for me. Just built three new seedling beds and pollinated dips and tets, now I can really put this new feature to work.
Thanks so very much Dave and crew! I tip my hat to you. Thumbs up

Thanks for the hard work - I can see how this is going to be a really nice change. I have a question. I added a plant not linked to the database. Yay! There it is with its picture and everything. I put it in one of my categories, which it shows. When I pull up the list of that category, it's not there. Will these unlinked plants be in a section of their own, so to speak, or can they be included in my general plant list and the related categories?

I haven't checked it out yet but this sounds awesome! Thank you so much Dave!!! I'm still going to add plants to the database but it's so nice to be able to add them to my list before they are added to the database. And having a place to put pictures from year to year of my daylily seedlings to see the changes is just fantastic! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

On the flip side, I will likely remove some of my inferior photos from the database, as there are plenty of better ones there, and just keep them in my personal list area. Declutter the database a bit.

There's definitely a bug there and I'm investigating it right now. Probably won't take long to find and correct the problem.

One more question. Is there an easy way to import the pictures that I have posted to the database of my plants to the new feature of my plant list? When I go to add a photo, it defaults to my computer files. Is there any way to do it using the BB code? (I'm not real clever in the cyber world.)

The category problem is fixed now.

Yes! For now, don't do anything. They will automatically show up in a soon-to-come update to the lists.

Lauri, could you link me to a page for a plant in your list that also has images in the corresponding plant database entry?

Along Lauribob's question: I have added in database photos to the comment section of most plants in my list, which is a different area than the new photo section. Will it behoove me to delete the photos from the comment section and instead upload them into the photo section? Could be a time consuming project, but I tend to get a lot of rainy days in the fall/winter...

Another tiny glitch. Now that you have made it so that my unlinked plants are indeed showing up in my categories (Yay!), the plants are no longer in alphabetical order when viewing the list by category. Hope this is an easy fix too!

Definitely. Now that you can upload photos directly into your list, the old workaround of using the comments is obsolete. Moving those photos into the plant itself would be a great idea.
