Swallowtails are so photogenic, can't get enough of 'em.

I wonder where, why they got that name?

I'm not sure about the name swallowtail butterfly but I always figured it was because they have a tail like the bird named Swallow.

Things are looking up over here! I'm still running around with my cell phone in my hand yelling, "Stop! Stay there! Pose for me!" But I haven't seen a neighbor freeze in place yet.... Whistling

Today, a few creatures did stop and pose though. Wow! I'm starting to feel like a contributing member of this thread! Please do help me ID them.

And I know this is never going to be a butterfly, but someone might still know what it is:

Good going, Joanna! Hurray! I think your butterfly is a cabbage white, but I'm not for sure. So someone else might know for sure. The other is in the family of longhorned beetles.

Thank you everyone for the supportive words! We all share a love of these beautiful visitors to our gardens, and of the things we plant, maybe more for them than for ourselves. These days, when choosing a plant, I want to know if it's resistant to deer and rabbits, and whether it attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. If the answers are all "yes," I'll consider it. As for the hummingbird moth, it was more luck in timing than anything else. What a strange and beautiful creature!

And thank you for the kind words about my petunias too! They are a total mistake. I ordered something called Tidal Wave from White Flower Farm--they're supposed to be a silver-white color, and I got these instead. I had already planted them by the time I realized that those purple-ish flowers were never going to be white so White Flower Farm has promised to send the proper order next spring. Meanwhile, I'm obviously not the only one enjoying their mistake!

Thank You!

Gorgeous shots Jo!

Your beetle is here with common name and Latin binomial. https://www.whatsthatbug.com/2...

I esp love your video of the hummingbird moth! Some people get scared of them and think they look like winged lobsters Hilarious!
If you plant their host plants you'll keep them close by as caterpillars too:

Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina)

Lonicera caerulea, honeyberry, blue-berried honeysuckle

Oh, thank you Cheryl! This makes me really happy as I already have the first two plants here--I planted the Major Wheeler a year ago and it's doing really, really well. The cherries have been here for over a decade. I understand that the hummingbird moths (which, IMHO, are extraordinarily beautiful) live for a short time so I'm very happy to see them. I never clear the leaves from my small area in the fall. I understand that's where they pupate and shelter through our very cold winters.

And yes! There's my little beetle! It's a Flower Longhorn! Hurray!
