Plant Red Flowers for the Hummingbirds

By Horntoad
January 1, 2012

Hummingbirds are highly attracted to the color red, which is why their feeders usually have red on them. See how many ways you can add red to your garden. Plant red flowers and paint a bird house or feeder red. How about painting flower pots red and using red in your garden art? Even wearing red clothing when working in the yard will attract them. The more red you can use, the better chance of catching the attention of a passing hummer.

Jay, I didn't know that about using red in so many ways in the garden to draw the attention of humming birds.
I will definitely keep this in mind this spring as I start working in the garden. Hmmmm, now I am going to have to buy a red shirt for gardening. Thumbs up

Lynn, some folks have been known to put red vinyl tablecloths on the ground under the hummer feeders in the spring, to help the hummers find them. I read that in a book or magazine once, a million years ago

Yes, I have read that one also. I have also read about hummers buzzing in close to check out people wearing red clothers or gardening hat.

Must be true. We pulled up on our property one day & just as dh was exiting the van he spied a hummer buzzing the red tail light. When It realized the tail light wasn't a flower it zipped off lickety split. But the point is, that quickly the hummer picked up on the red color.

Red to attract hummers is a good idea. But check a list of hummingbird plants, too. All kinds of bloom colors will make them happy if it's the right plants! Or a feeder will often keep them around, if it's kept fresh and clean. And I remember someone years ago put up tall red streamers just to catch their interest while they are flying by.

Yes Linda the idea of incorporating red in the garden is just to catch the attention of passing hummers. Once once you get them there you need to have a good, continuous food source to keep them.

I once had a hummingbird hover right under my neck, checking out my red tshirt.

I use a few red flowers to get their attention and then back those up with other colors of flowers that they feed on once they know they've been attracted by the red.

You might want to wait a while. Don't know about where you live, but March is spring here.

Petunia excerta is the hummingbird petunia. Yes, it is red, but they also liked my blue delphiniums.
Red definitely attracts them, but then they enjoy many flowers in the garden.
