I am sad ..on some level daily.... because of the state of our country. I know it is cyclic...but it still bothers me. I wish we would be exposed to as much good as bad. This is a wonderful country with wonderful wonderful decent people ..I fear little kids will not know that and feel frightened.. guess we have to do all we can to speak with them and set personal example.

Rosie, I am with you. The media does so much to feed fear. I hate it. There are more good people than bad. There is more to be grateful for than to be scared of. I wish we would hear more about the great things that people do every day without recognition.

I agree That's why I don't read/watch the news. They say the most well-adjusted people are those who Don't wake up first thing in the morning & read the morning newspaper. What a way to kill the joy of a brand new day!
On the other hand, if there's something that affects friends & family, they will let me know & I can help people through it.
I like starting the day on a joyful note..... Whistling

I agree and Thank You!
News is and has always been a $$$ making business. Problem is half of what we see and hear is less than truthful whether TV, Radio or printed on paper. There is always a slant to sell news and make a profit. To hear the media tell it one would believe almost anything that is slanted negatively. I refuse like many of you to be a part of it. There are simply too many good people out there doing GOOD things; and we rarely hear of it in the news! Thumbs down

Our media isn't interested in telling the good stories of people helping others. Remember their motto "If it bleeds, it leads."

Jean you are so correct. I have seen locally where our state National Guard has sent truckloads of food and supplies to Houston with manpower. Also the Canadian Air Force sent a plane load of needed supplies. But do you think this was national news? No, they were looking for negative stories of who to "blame" for all this. It is so dishonest and slanted. One furniture dealer opened his warehouse for a shelter: Not much news there!

I stopped watching the news and negative media a long time ago...I don't follow politics and I don't complain about it either. I try everyday to find something to be grateful for and post almost daily something positive on facebook. I was at the point where I thought maybe people were getting tired of seeing my "Pollyanna" attitude and posted about stopping. I was deluged with friends saying how much some of my posts reminded them to be grateful and positive and to please not stop...that made me want to do it more.
I try every day to keep my granddaughters from being negative (there mom is a complainer Whistling ) and finding things to be grateful for. I do believe there is more good in the world than bad, we just have to keep looking for it Lovey dubby

I learned a long, long, long time ago the bad part of humanity is as normal as the good side.

For me it is not unexpected , therefore; while I do not embrace it, it does not bother me in any real way.
Now this is partly due to a sibling being among the bad side but also because if you are accepted by those on the bad side they are more loyal than all the forked -tongue goodies who will stab you in the back quite quickly.

Actually, I've seen pretty good news media coverage on Harvey...many, many stories on "Mattress Mack", on ordinary people rescuing and helping people without any thought to their own safety or needs, on all the people volunteering, organizations and countries coming to aid the people in Texas, and I'm sure all Texans are grateful for every bit of help given. I'm not sure what news stories people might be reading or watching, but if you try, I think you can always find some fairly balanced coverage of anything that is going on. I've kept in touch with many relatives in different Harvey-affected parts of Texas. All fairly okay and none lost their homes or lives, thank God. Some went through fear and anxiety, some evacuated or stayed with friends or had other evacuees staying with them. Harvey was the worst disaster Texas has seen in a long time, so of course, if a person wanted to believe it wasn't horrible and people aren't suffering and losing homes and in some cases lives, I guess you'd have to avoid any mention of it. Sorry, but I feel a lot of empathy for the victims of this, so I get emotional. Sometimes I even feel a bit guilty because my own area of Texas didn't experience any weather problems...and I know that's silly, of course.

I recall telling my mom it is hard to watch the news as it makes me sad and cry and there are so many bad people. She replied that there are actually many good people and you just do not hear about them as often.

I'm a Librarian and I refuse to negate sourced, fact-based information. If it's hearsay, gossip, negative for the sake of negativity (i.e., if it bleeds then it leads) then no, I won't have anything to do with that. I'm a Clinical Medical Librarian who has worked in a VA Medical Center that serviced three medical schools (Georgetown U., George Washington U. and Howard U.) in the District of Columbia; was an Academic Chemistry Librarian at the Catholic University of America; a Medical Librarian for the American Psychiatric Association in Washington, DC and got my start as a Librarian at the National Geographic Society in Wash., DC. Having said that, I have no use for the concept of "fake news." There are too many sources of solid, credible information and that accommodates education and elucidates learning.

Well, very sad...my other grandson died at 19 years old (my son-in-law's boy from his first marriage). Tragic...it was a suicide, family's heartbroken. Such a great guy, so intelligent, had Aspergers Syndrome.

Sincere condolences, Linda. I'd never heard of Aspergers Syndrome before, so I googled it. Terrible sounding disease. I simply have no words to express how this makes me feel. Group hug
