LOL! I was going back and forth between the Oct and Nov threads trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.

I am finally getting ready for bird watching. A little late, I know. Had cataract surgery in both eyes last month and I am finally getting used to seeing without glasses. I still will need glasses for reading and driving though. No RX for 2 more weeks. Argh! So today I am doing a good cleaning of my feeders and going to make some suet.

oh so great to discover a bird photos tab here too! Will indulge you with a few iconic Kookaburra photos, my back fence, there's a gate to the 'bush-corridor' there and from time to time, depending on time of year, one or two kookaburras like to sit there.

Yesterday was another clear, crisp and calm day in Allentown, so, I grabbed the Nikons and headed into the Little Lehigh Parkway. A bit upstream of the gauging station bridge I found one of our old feathered friends perched on a rock on the opposite stream bank:

He did a bit of preening, seemed to chucle, and then settled into one of his statue modes:

After twenty or so minute of inaction, I continued upstream. Fifty yards or so after the ninety degree turn, I just happened to glance up a tree on the opposite bank. There was another Heron, forty to fifty feet above the stream:

I switched to the long lens and grabbed a few closeups:

I hung around for twenty minutes or so, again with no meaningful action. I continued upstream to the trout nursery.
As I headed back home, I noted that, an hour and a half later, both birds were still parked in their original spots.

Hi Johnny, enjoyed your bird photos. The Downey Woodpecker is super. Sparrow, yes I'm sure you're right. Remember them from childhood years but never see them here. I believe you can blame that on territorial species, one culprit would be the predominant Noisy/Native Miner.

Johnny if I was familiar with your bird species I'd enjoy throwing in the suggestion. Too many oceans between us, and the birds; though that doesn't stop some from winging their way to the other side does it? Amazing - the birds and what they can accomplish.

A quote from Robert Lynd: There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before.
If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere.

Native Noisy Miners (I mentioned a little earlier today); to aquaint you, sharing some pics. They're a little bit quirky and interesting to watch; comical expressions at times!

...it's a stand-off?

ps - I know it should have been obvious (but I get it now), that photographs for this category are meant to have actually been taken DURING the specific month. Was so eager to work with photos already in my files ..........(oops, won't happen again).

I'm pretty sure your sparrow is a Chipping Sparrow. They have a rusty colored cap on the top of the head and a dark line through the eye. I have a few of those around my place too. Pretty little things. Field Sparrows are similar but have some orange around the face. The field sparrows seem less common too. I've only ever seen one here. But then, I have no fields ... :-D

Carole, no problem with your photos being "out of season". We love seeing birds from other countries no matter what time of year! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
