I've been searching for the brightest (think Screamcicle) orange Dips with little success. Did discover Walter's Tango and the kind folks at Park Lane Daylilies have me on their list to buy this one in the spring. Looks like Cochenour-Kennedy and Gossard (Tet conversion) are using Walter's Tango with great success. But I want more. The database is only showing 4 choices when I set parameters of Dip/orange bloom. Sigh. Any one out there who can steer me to more choices?

You might go on an orange dip hunt by looking at orange tets and see if there are any conversions in the background.

Tranquil Lake Nursery has their main catalog separated into lists by color, maybe some others do too. Heavenly Gardens has a search engine on their site.

I think the color 'Orange' has been a dirty word among daylily hybridizers, so try a different search method in the database here. Select 'Diploid' in the drop-down, but don't put a check in the 'Orange' box, instead, enter Orange into the 'Color description' box. You'll have to wade through a lot of hits, but you may find something. Try 'burnt' too.

As a last resort, look around for some true yellows and clear reds that have been proven as good parents and make babies.

Thank you for the links! I had checked Tranquil Lakes, love that site, with no success. The link for Clement is appreciated. I think in the mad dash to get away from the "species" look, a very valuable color (hybridizing tool) has been ignored. Thank you for your help, I'll keep looking. And looking forward to my Walter's Tango. I do have several other oranges including Chesapeake Crablegs. But none with the heat/intensity/clarity that one sees in the orange Tets. I think that's a shame.

The brightest, clearest, most saturated orange diploid that I grow is a double - 'Flower Pavilion', (Kirchoff, 1985). It's large bloom on a nicely taller scape. It's a double that will breed with no trouble finding usable anthers.

Dottie Warrell has worked with oranges.

When I think orange dip. I think of Safety Flare. Older, but a good one that carries over a distance with good size blooms. I took this image at the hybridizers.



For smaller orange dip, I grow Little Boy Bob. It has smaller flowers on normal height scapes, but puts out a lot of them. This image was taken in my garden a few years back where Little Boy Bob looked great among the perennials.

Ellen Laprises FLAMING FLAMINGO and BOB MARLEY are both excellent oranges, and grow here along with SCREAMCICLE. Ellen is from MA, so they'd do better in the north. Then there's an oldie from Stu Morton(who lived in PA) called KRAKATOA LAVA. I think I've posted pics of all of these before. All excellent, and some of the best bright oranges here.

I have no idea why I thought I couldn't afford to shop Marietta, thanks for that link, Char! Orange Rush is gonna be mine! Thanks All and I stand corrected. There are some stunning orange dips out there! And, Judy, I'm not at all sure what to do with doubles. I received Bernie's Fault as a gift from Williams last spring, it is a nice rich orange, if I can figure out how best to use it.

We grow thousands of daylilies and a favorite of garden visitors is Heavenly Dragon Fire. It is a tet but just indicates that vivid orange flowers draw attention.
I hybridize dips primarily and most of the orange ones that I grow are blends.

In my hybridizing, I want to try:
to create an orange with a black eye
to create an orange with a white watermark

We do like our orange!



You have to get some flowers to work with and then it just takes time. I think there are more vivid orange tets than dips but I have collected a variety of dips. Also, it is not that difficult to take a double and create single blooms.

It is pretty, but it's a tet.

Gotta have Dips. Nothing against Tets, just have already committed myself in that direction.

I added this little dip this year, it is a mini or small flower though (can't remember which off the top of my head) and from Europe so not sure if you will find it in the US, thought that I would show it just in case

If you are looking for small, there is the mini, Bertie Ferris.
It blooms for a very long time in my garden.

I keep going back to that one in my searches, Valerie. It's shorter than what I want, but maybe I can fix that in the next generation. It's inexpensive and very easy to find. Worth a try! Thank you.

Centerton one starts early and reblooms. occasionally doubles.

You might contact Anna Carlson and ask her about 'Woodlands Scarlet Ibis'. I haven't seen it in person, but I'm guessing it's a vivid red orange and its stats indicate it would be quite tall. She could answer any questions and if she has it for sale and you were interested, she has sent very good fans to me.
