This is going to be fun Fun FUN! Hurray!

Our resident acorn tycoon @zuzu is offering up a special incentive to encourage comments in our database in the form of a fun contest.

Starting now and ending this Thursday at 7:00pm Central Time, all comments in the database will receive DOUBLE acorns (one from the system and then at the end of the week I'll give you an extra acorn for each comment you posted.)

Then on Friday we will have the big drawing - every comment is a ticket to win. I'll then randomly draw one lucky winner who will then receive a whopping 250 acorns from zuzu! What will you do with 250 acorns? That's your business! Buy shiny new microbadges, purchase tickets in future raffles, give them as tips to other members, or hoard them for a future use!

Now, please, keep a few things in mind:

1) Don't post one-line comments. I reserve the right to exclude your comments from the contest if you're abusing it (not that anyone here would do that, of course. Green Grin! ) Comments should be informative, educational and helpful to the other users of the database. Also, avoid personal notes ("I grow this over by the barn where I can see it from my workshop where I paint and make glassworks.") Smiling

2) Proofread your comments at least once before you finally submit them. Reading your comment always helps you find any little errors that need correcting (this is something I need to do more!)

3) Don't post the same comment (or nearly the same) to multiple plants. Make sure each comment is unique and specific to the entry. If your comment applies to all cultivars of a certain kind of plant, then post the comment to the non-cultivar version of that plant.

4) Don't ask questions about the plant in the comments. Questions should be asked in the forums and our Ask a Question area.

5) Don't link to other websites in your comment. External links often become broken over the years and they give a bad experience to future readers of your comment.

I'm not planning on doing a video of the drawing BUT if we get more than 250 comments during the coming week then we'll do a video and make a bigger deal out of it. Smiling

Have fun!

Edited to add: We have more people stepping up to provide 250 acorn packages for prizes. Current list of 250 Acorn prizes offered:

@zuzu
@Calif_Sue
@Baja_Costero
@robertduval14
@KentPfeiffer
@eclayne

One of my favorite plants , here in the Pacific Northwest is Black Elderberry( Sambucca)
I have it planted in an Eastern exposure. It has beautiful pink flowers in June against the Black leaves of the Plant.
It is almost disease/pest resisitant. Deers do not touch it .
My specimen is over 7 years old and by the end of Summer, I cut it down for winter , it is nearly 20 feet high and 6 feet wide.
It is easy to prune and shape.
Great for a place in your garden you just want to leave and let grow, great for privacy screening as well.

Make sure you post it to the plant in our database, not here in the forums. Smiling

Click on Plants Database in the menubar at the top, then click on "Search by name". Search elderberry and it'll come right up. You'll see the link on that page to "Post a comment".

One of my 'winter chores' is to systematically go through My List and update data information and add a comment (if not already done). Keeps me on my toes.

Here in the beautiful Ozarks, I am known as the Rose Lady, growing beautiful roses of various genus around our home. The scent greets us and visitors as we linger on the front porch. Of all roses, my very favorite is the one I fondly call the Lavender Tea Lady. Such exquisite color and scent!
In the Winter, rather than pruning all the way back, I gently trim all my lovelies only a few inches, encouraging regrowth in the Spring, while honoring their lovely foliage. Seven powder protects them from unwanted varmits and fungus. I plan on starting some from seed this coming month, because I was offered the opportunity to purchase seeds that came with instructions. Will let you know how it goes! Welcome! :welcome:

Sheri, what a wonderful comment about growing roses but you should copy and paste it to the database entry for Roses (Rosa) where it will always be seen. Just look on the left side of that page and click where it says Post a comment; write your comment or copy/paste your above comment, click on preview and then submit.

Indoors our home is a plethera of plants, from newbie chives started from onion roots to a Grand Flame Violet; succulents to bonsai, Indian Begonia to Lucky Bamboo. So many to choose from, it would be impossible to select a favorite.

Pictured here is a small grouping on our bedroom dresser. From 👉 to ←, my Flame Violent, two succulents in an old ice cream maker scored at a city wide yard sale last year, chives (background), and more succulents peeking out from my lady bear.

Very thankful to all who are putting on this contest! So glad I happened upon the thread.

@dave: I do have a question about a comment I posted on the Casa Blanca lily that did not receive an acorn on. No biggie, just wondering why so I don't make the same mistake.

That comment was just under the limit for length. Short comments of only a few sentences do not get acorn awards. You will get the bonus acorn at the end of the week for that comment, though, and will be entered for the drawing.
