I just noticed that some of my DLs have buds with sharp green points sticking up. I never really studied the buds before. I plan to write down the names and see if they are in the same family or what. Does anyone know what I am talking about?

I don't have many DL's that are ruffled. But there is one that is quite ruffled and if I recall, the bud on that one has points protruding out. Check to see if the ones that have the "points" are real ruffled DL'S. Just a thought.

@caitlinsgarden Can you take a picture and post it? I think I understand what you're describing, but I'd like to be sure before I can confirm what Sue is talking about

If they are along the seams of the buds, they are most likely part of the bloom's edge which could be teeth, tentacles, knobs, etc.

If they are random on the outside of the buds, it's indicative of thrips infestation.

Is it like Larry's pictures, the last two in this thread?

If so, as Judy said, they are usually attributed to thrips (or aphids but it's definitely not aphids). However, the cause has never actually been proven so it may be thrips or it may be something else.

Good picture, Larry. Have you had the leafminer there for long?

The leaf miner has been here for several years, don't know exactly when it showed up, but that black fly shows up in a lot of my photos of daylilies.

The picture of Larrys showing the buds with "bumps" looks like thrips damage to me. When judging daylily exhibitions, if we (judges panels) see this, we take off points for thrips damage.

I will have to look again and see if I find any of the little critters, I will do the paper test again.

I will do the clip board with a white sheet of paper test again and see if any thrips show up. So far I have never seen any, but that does not mean they are not there.

Most of my buds have green points. I've always associated with temperature. I'll pay more attention when temps will really go up.

I need better daylily terminology. I am not talking about the actual buds, but rather the green part that surrounds the bud. it is a normal part of the scape, but distinctive.

Here is a good diagram showing the parts of a daylily. It makes a good reference chart.

Although note it should be spelled pistil, not pistol, since daylilies don't usually engage in armed combat.

The AHS has a similar diagram (with correct spelling)

Looks like pistil to me? But I do actually like the AHS chart diagram.

Well, it is spelled correctly in the upper part of the diagram. I did not notice that in the lower part. I do like the AHS diagram .
