new here and sure this has been covered.
I took 19 seeds and soaked them in water in a south facing window, 14 germinated .
waited around three weeks until the root and the one leaf was good. then i took a round bucket of potting soil, planted the seedling around the edge with the leaf hanging over the edge . O, the soil was moist. set the bucket outside in a shaded area. after around a few days noticed the leafs turning brown.
5 were still living, a week later all were dead but one. this morning it was turning brown. what have i done wrong ?

Did you plant them in sterile soil?
Was the soil moist, but not soaking wet?
Were you gentle with the root - poked a hole in the soil, slid the root into the hole, patted it gently with soil, but did not really disturb the root too much?

Leaf should have been plenty big - I have planted them with just the root and no leaf. I can only think of 2 things: they really do seem to need sterile soil - mold can attack and kill pretty quickly at that stage. Or the soil was too wet or too dry - they need to be kept evenly moist, but not wet until that root turns into a tiny bulb.
Do you have more seeds so you can try again?

Oh yes, that is very pretty indeed. I assume the seed starter is fresh and right out of the bag? If so, it should be fine. Just keep evenly moist - not wet, not dry, and hopefully they will sprout. And the floating ones, when you plant them, use fresh seed starter or sterile soil - you can bake the soil in the oven or microwave - but watch it and remove it from either if/when it starts to stink. Poke a small hole in the soil with a toothpick and gently lay the root into the hole. Allow the actual seed to rest right at the top of the soil, and gently water in the root. Keep us posted!

thinking out loud,
have had two people to tell me to just lay the seed on top of the soil and don't cover with soil and
have had two to say light cover of soil.
what to do, when a seed falls from the seed pod its not covered .
i'm lost again.

I do not cover mine. I float them in water. After the root starts to grow I poke a hole in the soil and slide the root into the hole, then lay the seed on top. Than water just a bit to settle things. The seeds are very flat, so in nature I think they just fall to the earth and lay on top, rather than under the soil. If you cover the seed, I would only put a tiny amount of soil on top.

@cuzzx I would hesitate to cover the container - a white wispy mildew might grow. HOWEVER - if you lifted the lid once a day for an hour or two, that would probably keep the mildew from growing - I have actually done that very thing - to keep the soil moist, but not let any mold or mildew grow. I take the lid off and set the pot under my reading lamp - the light helps keep the mildew from growing I think. So only put the lid on if you are able to air the pot out once a day for an hour or two. Amaryllis seeds do not have a very long shelf life. Plant them ASAP. If you store them, put them in the fridge but keep them sealed and dry. Each month you wait reduces how many will germinate. Several months in the fridge should be OK, but try to plant them ASAP. I am interested to watch your progress - I learn a lot from other people I tip my hat to you. You being in AL is probably a plus for you - I am way up here in Ohio.
@shalyn - I have never seen any seed swaps for Amaryllis seeds -- perhaps you should organize one?? I have some hybrid seeds I am will to share with people - but they should seed me a couple of postage stamps first. Whistling

From seed - outside - in Connecticut!

Here is the first flower from about a hundred Amaryllis seeds I started 5 years ago. Last fall I put all of the bulbs (close to 100!) in the ground on the west side of the house and covered them with a couple of layers of heavy clear plastic. Despite one of the coldest January's in recent years most of them came up! There were a few wasted buds but this one (in the middle of the pack) had three beautiful flowers. I'm hoping for even more blooms next June
