Daylilies
I inherited daylilies from my uncle, but the tags were all changed around so I do not know the actual names. My uncle was Col CG Simon, or Clarence Simon, the son of the cultivar "Simon". I have the daylilies that were given to him by his mother. With the passing of his wife recently, I was given the opportunity to dig up the daylilies, however they were also dug up by their children and grandchildren, some took the markers, some had no markers.
I'm trying to accurately identify the flowers, since they are the "original decendants" of the Simon Nursery. How best do you propose this to be done? I have been taking pictures of the ones that are blooming, along with the dates of blooms to refer to later as "early, midseason, etc".
Any information or guidance you can give me would be much appreciated.

Do you know the exact names of any of the dayliles you have? Were these daylilies registered daylilies, are were they seedlings, or daylilies purchased and used for hybridizing? What time span would these daylilies cover?
I suppose this could get very involved, but maybe not.
So my suggestion is to post photos of the plants you have and all info you have on them here in a new post just about Simon daylily ID and lets just do what we can to ID them.

With the link below you can go to the daylily data base.
Under hybridizer type in Simon.

https://garden.org/plants/grou...

There are 67 daylilies. Unfortunately most do not have pictures. Here are some clues to use. A lot of them have peoples names. Maybe those people were given those daylilies and they have pictures. If you have a yellow daylily besides putting in Simon then go to color description and type yellow. That can limit the field.

Also, for the ones that have pictures here are some examples to use

If you actually click on the flower you will get information on the picture.
It shows who actually had these daylilies to sell. Maybe they sell other Simon's or would have pictures of other cultivars.

And very important...in what ever region Simon did her hybridizing work, I bet she belonged to AHS...American Hemerocallis Society. You might find someone locally who is familiar with her daylilies.

May you be blessed with success and beautiful flowers!

****i did all that and I have the names and have searches the databases and various databases and I'm getting different "stories" or rather different names.
I actually have a database with them now.
I have names of some of them and I'm getting pictures of them as the bloom. But for example I have 2 blooming now (I'm in pa) and the tag said "tipper" but this looks nothing like the description.
(See picture below)

And very important...in what ever region Simon did his (HER)hybridizing work, (Layfette Louisiana) I bet She belonged to AHS...American Hemerocallis Society. She did /and does and has many awards on her flowers. The one you had a picture of -Rosellen Simon - that was my aunt that just died.
So here's some cool trivia - Mrs Simon hybridized daylilies to the traits of people she knew. Suzanne Simon is petite, Clarence Simon is a strong tall lily. Anyways thanks for the help. I will upload pics as they come in.

Perennial Pleasure? - Simon
This is what I had on a marker. Not sure if it is correct. I can measure scape and bloom but is that accurate on the first bloom after trasnplanting?

So here is the question. I just transplanted them the beginning of April. It was the only opportunity I had to get the flowers. If the bloom now would the size of the bloom and the scape still be accurate or would they be "stunted" from such a recent transplant? Also speaking of how many bulbs - I have no idea. We dug up these flowers that have been here since the 70's. The bulbs were plentiful to say the least.

I just used the search for the first one using the color coral with the hybridizer as Simon. It only yielded one result registered as 'Coral Crepe' registered in 1971. You can check it out in the database if you like.

Since you just dug and replanted in April, I would be wary about the height and bloom size being completely reliable. I think neither may match. In fact, I think both those traits can vary with care, weather, etc. You may need to grow them for several years and see. On the other hand, some traits will be fixed. If the form is way off, e.g. Also, if any are supposed to be the tiny hemerocallis types, I don't they would be larger blooms.

Good luck!

I figured as much in the measuring and first year out. I will go look at Coral Crepe and see if it's similar. Many people she hybridized with I recognize their names so maybe it will match up. We'll see!
Ps we have way too much rain so maybe I should be "dontneedrain" Hilarious!

Raspberry Frills was hybridized by Williamson. The daylilies you have might not have all been hybridized by Simon. But were used in her hybidizing program. That complicates identity even further. We can not even guarantee your pictures are Simon daylilies.

Unless someone else here has some ideas to share I do not know how much help can be given. The lack of pictures is a stumbling block. Add to it the fact everytime I look up one of these daylilies, I am not finding people who own them. My best advice is that your first step is to locate people who actually own them or have pictures of them. Might be a way to meet a lot of very nice people.

May you be blessed with help and success!

Edited to add forgot to say: Perennial Pleasure hybridized by Hardy.

You size and growth question was answered by needrain and you already replied to that. Confused Your post today is a duplicate of the one posted yesterday.
(FYI, I didn't see any question from anyone about how many bulbs since daylilies are not bulbs anyway.)

***
Someone asked about bud count my brain read bulb. Sorry!
I'll start a new thread as suggested earlier about Simon Daylily Id.
One thing I should note to everyone and this is my own fault for being uneducated so I'm sorry - when I was looking up names of ones I had from tags -and notes by someone above-I don't have All Simon. I have others now that I have been reasearching the cultivar. Hardy, Williams, MacMillan, Wild. Some of these were hybridized with Simon and some weren't. So I guess I may never find out the true names but I would like to try regardless of who it came from. They are beautiful and maybe I have something that was thought to be lost. Wouldn't that be cool!?
Thank you all so much and for your patience.

@lkas0127 By "bulbs" I think you mean fans or divisions- that's how daylilies multiply as clones. By "buds" we are referring to unopened blooms.

Sometimes bud count can give you clues as to the variety. Keep posting as many stats as you can. There are some very wise daylily folks on here and most of us like a challenge.

And Welcome! to the forum

There may be some more info in the archives of the American Hemerocallis (Daylily) Society. Decades of their Daylily Journal are readable online for members. For example 'Clarence Simon' hybridized by MacMillan won the Stout Silver Medal in 1975 so there probably is an article associated with that. It used to be easy to look stuff up on the members' portal but for some reason lately it doesn't do complete searches any more, but members can ask the Archivist for historical information.

I guess I need to be a member? I was thinking about joining now that I'm so into the daylilies. I've always been this way but now that I have all these it's all I can think about is finding their names and history ! (Don't mind my excitement)

She was so proud of that award!!
