New = I've never really paid much attention to them

That being said, I'm excited to start learning about them! This is one my neighbor said I could divide from her yard. It's probably a regular variety, but any clues to its name?

Welcome Sara, you have joined a very informative, helpful group of enablers.
I can't help you with Id but it is a very nice daylily and such a nice neighbor to let you divide it.

I've been spending a lot of time getting lost in the Iris forum

Didn't even know these daylilies were there (our 4th summer in this house) because there's a red peony in front of the plants and the blooms are quite similar in color. They'll be a nice addition to things.

I expect you already know this, but daylilies are actually not lilies, even though daylily people sometimes call them that as a kind of daylily "slang." Just thought I'd mention it since there's currently a thread related to the confusion over that on another NGA forum.

I had no idea! Although, in my internet searches for "lilies" yesterday, no daylilies showed up. Now I know why! So interesting...this is what I love about flowers. You think you might have something figured out, then a curveball comes and reminds you that you don't know much at all

So are daylilies their own "thing"? I'm going to start looking stuff up...

Edited to add: I'll take a pic of this whole plant to make sure it's truly a daylily...but I'm cautiously optimistic it is.

So...if daylilies have rhizomes...can they be dried and stored like iris?

Taxonomists have been having fun moving them around from family to family of late. True lilies are in the genus Lilium, family Liliaceae. There are other plants also in the lily family but it was determined back in the 1980s that daylilies (genus Hemerocallis) should not have been included.

So first they were moved to their own family, the Hemerocallidaceae. Then some experts decided the family Xanthorrhoeaceae was more appropriate. Fortunately, since I can never spell the latter without looking it up (and I just had to edit the post because I missed out an e) the most recent family placement for daylilies is the Asphodelaceae.

The genus has not changed though, true lilies are still Lilium while daylilies are still Hemerocallis.

Hope this helps rather than making it seem even more complicated!

I've heard about things getting moved around all over the plant world, so long as they're still the same genus I'll keep it straight. There are 3 varieties of daylilies between mine and the ones pictured above, being able to store them vs potting (which I know wold really be better) will make taking them with me so much easier! I've dug up BOTH lilies and daylilies and never even paid attention to rhizomes vs bulbs. It all makes sense now

I am also kind of new here. I have had many daylilies over the years but am now in a new home with very few for now. I hope to keep expanding my selection again.

One thing about daylilies that almost nobody knows (except for daylily addicts) is the reason they are called daylilies is that every flower that blooms on a daylily will last just one day and then whither away. Every time I tell a family member or friend that, they are surprised. I must admit...I was too the first time I heard that. Until I was bitten by the "daylily bug" and had to have more, more, more. Now I'm hybridizing them too (just for fun not for profit).

Sue, I had read that...but didn't fully understand it until I started religiously deadheading my Stella de oro's this spring. Holy cow. First few days wasn't so bad then they kept coming! Do all daylilies do so well when they're deadheaded regularly?
