As the thread title says, this is for local pick-up only. I will not ship bulbs! Bulbs are delivered in September, except for amaryllises and oriental hyacinths, which are harvested later. Pick-up will be some combination of the fall plant swap at Lisa's (assuming timely delivery), at my place in Frederick, or at Aspenhill's place near Lucketts, VA.

As usual, our vendor is ADR Bulbs. https://www.adrbulbs.com/categ...

I can log in to see prices, but most of you won't be able to do so... no worries, just ask and I'll look it up. For the most part, you can expect to pay 1/3 of what it would cost at a retail store (or even a semi-wholesale site like van Engelen). One exception are crocuses, which are usually priced competitively but not cheaply. They've provided us with lovely big bulbs in past years! In particular, you can't beat jumbo Amaryllis bulbs for $5.50!

Time to turn our minds to cooler fall weather and planting bulbs for a glorious spring show! Post on this thread to say what bulbs you're interested in and how many (a range can be helpful -- eg, "at least 15 but could take up to 50"). We can only order in wholesale quantities, so if there are 75 daffodils in the box we'll need orders for 75 of that variety. (Well, I'm sorta easy about ordering something even if the box isn't quite "full," or pre-sold, because I can usually count on this group to juggle numbers as needed at the end.)

Please bear in mind that this is a group purchase, which varies from a retail order in a couple of significant ways. (Yes, this is the fine print... READ IT anyway!)

1. It's a cooperative effort, so people may need to be flexible about quantities -- if we've pre-sold one entire box but don't have enough interest for two boxes, then I'll juggle the numbers around so everybody gets some. (I'd rather do that then say, first come first served, so tough luck.) Similarly, unless you are willing to purchase a whole box of something, if there's not enough interest in an item, it may not make it to our final order.

2. I'm not a retailer, so I can't absorb a loss... if something happens such that we pay our money but don't get some/all of our bulbs, you are still responsible for paying your share. (If I pay them, you pay me. If I get a refund, so do you.) That said, we've been working with ADR for years, and even when there are snags, they've always taken care of us.

3. Payment is due at pick-up, unless you haven't participated in one of my group buys -- then I may ask for payment ahead of time and/or limit your total purchase price (both for your sake & mine).

This thread can be a little crazy at first, with everybody posting what they see that they like, trying to get others interested in the same, me chiming in to say what's still "available" (eg, needing to be ordered by us as a group before I can order the box/bag/flat), and so forth. Don't worry. Somehow, it all seems to work out just fine!

4. There will be 2% - 10% added to your total, to cover repacking supplies and/or unsold bulbs. (That lets me order a box here and there that hasn't been entirely pre-sold, although usually we can "sell off" those bulbs at the end of the sale.)

Peruvian bulbs are cheaper than Dutch bulbs, right? I would like a mix of Peruvian Souvreign, Design Red, Ice Queen and Mandela. Willing to spend $35-40. Heck, if anyone is ordering Dutch Gervase, I'd like a few of those too. So I guess I'm in for $55-60. Completely flexible.

Yes, Peruvian bulbs are cheaper -- either $5 or $5.50 per bulb (jumbo size). The Dutch bulbs have been a teeny bit better quality on average, and of course they have more variety, and those bulbs are still under $10 (compare to paying $30-40 for a comparable bulb locally).

ADR has a dozen different amaryllis varieties from Peru this year. Looks like they have discontinued their Israeli bulbs. They have 26 Dutch varieties. Definitely an amaryllis for every taste!

Right now, we have 4 bags of Peruvian amaryllis ordered during the early discount sale that still have some available bulbs. Lisa, I put you down for 2 of each as you previously requested... I'm sure we'll add more varieties.

So there are 3 each of 'Cherry Blossom' (white & pink), 'Double King' (red) , 'Ice Queen' (white), and 'Mandela' (deep dark red) available. First come, first served. These 12 bulbs will be 10% off the regular price. If we order a second box of any of these, they will be at the regular price of $4.90 or $5.50 per bulb.[/b]

I'm always up for another bulb or two of 'Gervase' ( ). It's my all time favorite, or at least a tie with 'Blossom Peacock' (sadly not on the list this year). I thought the double white & green bloom of 'Marilyn' looked pretty awesome as well ($8.90 per jumbo bulb).

I would love to have some paperwhites, but their bulk quantities seem to be quite large with the exception of Narcissi tazetta 'Paperwhite Ziva'. I can take about 20 - 30 if others want them to make up for an order. Their scent is absolutely heavenly.

I'm not sure if paperwhites ship with other fall bulbs or later with amaryllises, but either way we can see about splitting a box!

N. tazetta 'Erlicheer' is listed with their paperwhites (probably cold treated for indoor bloom?) but will also grow outside... I'd personally rather have that powerful fragrance in a less enclosed space. However as Donner noted, it's available only in flats (in this case, 300 big bulbs for $165, or 10 for $5.50). Imagine a little drift of it perfuming your whole yard in late spring! The small bunch-flowering blooms would look really sweet in bouquets, too.

Corydalis 'Purple Bird' is $91.50 for 150 ($3.05 for 5), and 'Beth Evans' (pink) is 150 for $46.50 ($3.10 for 10!).

I haven't been able to find Corydalis 'Blue Heron' as a tuber from any place I'd trust... but Terra Nova does have it on their site, and Black Creek Nurseries is on TN's list of retailers... so we might be able to ask Black Creek if they'd carry it in spring (maybe try again to see about ordering a flat in advance).

OK, this one is new to me... I'm familiar with siberian squill, but I've never seen anything like these big round blooms! https://www.adrbulbs.com/flowe... $110 for 100, so not cheap, but the bulbs are daffodil-sized. (B&B charges about $5 for one bulb, or $182 for 50, so "cheap" is a relative term.)

Wikipedia says it's aka "Portuguese Squill" and is mediterranean, not from peru.

I might also be able to go buy some pro mix in SE Pa- but i also don't have a truck at this time- just the blazer or mazda, so i can't take too many bales due to space. unfortunately .

From the Van Engelen site:

SCILLA PERUVIANA
Native to 17th century Spain, the tender Giant Squill has one, or more, stems of 6" globes composed of compact, lavender-blue florets with strappy, 12" foliage.

In HZ 8-10, plant each bulb shallowly, 8" to 10" apart, with the bulb nose covered by 1" to 2" of soil in full to partial sunlight and well-draining, lean soil. A low rosette of fall foliage may appear. Water regularly in spring, but discontinue watering after the flowers and foliage fade into summer dormancy.

In colder zones, it's best planted shallowly with its nose peeking out of the soil surface in containers with sterile, neutral pH soil in well-draining pots. Fertilize lightly. Allow the bulbs to go dormant in mid-summer, after flowers and foliage fade. The plants will begin growing again in late summer or early fall. Take containers indoors before frost and bring them back outdoors after the last spring frost.

Bulb size: 18 cm/up. HZ: 8-10. 6" to 12

Catalog #3956
5/$14.25
25/$69.00
50/$132.00
100/$251.25

Corydalis 'Purple Bird' is $91.50 for 150 ($3.05 for 5), and 'Beth Evans' (pink) is 150 for $46.50 ($3.10 for 10!).

Holland Bulb Farms has them in smaller quantities and are currently on sale:
Purple Bird: $7.48 for 5
Beth Evans: $4.98 for 5

It's quite a price difference, but I don't know that I can swing (or find room for) 300! Anyone else interested?

Hope these Dorydalis varieties are hardy. I bought a Dorydalis 'Berry Happy' from Merrifield several years ago. It grew big, bloomed the entire season, but died over the winter. You think I would learn my lesson and stop there? No, I didn't. I bought another one and it died again. So that ended my career of growing fancy Dorylalis. Sticking tongue out

thx, Rick, didn't realize the peruvian squill were tender! Wonder how they'd look displayed with amaryllis...

I'd take 5 (at the higher price) or 15 (at the ADR price) 'Purple Bird' Corydalis, but I've tried without success also. I have not tried in my rock garden (made of spent potting soil and chicken grit) or in the fence row (woodland soil), so either place may be better.

Sue, I have a few Amaryllis bulbs available from our earlier spring order (scroll up for details). I also have some N. Thalia and Muscari armeniacum available at good prices, will check on those actual numbers but at least 150 Thalia and 400 grape hyacinth.

Otherwise I'd say the focus right now is on anything you'd like to order but don't want an entire box/bag... see who else is interested and if we can split the quantity between participants.

Actually, the other focus would be on seeing who else is interested. I know it's weird to think about fall planting and spring blooms in the middle of summer, but if we wait until the end of August availability will be more limited. We are fortunate in that Walter has been willing to offer us free shipping without an early order deadline, because they like to support garden clubs.

I thought there were a lot of people interested when we were chatting at the seed swap and at the spring plant swap... if you are still interested, please speak up even if you're not sure just what you'd like to order.

I got your 'Purple Bird' Corydalis and Satisfaction lilies last night. Not sure when they ship, other than 'fall'.

i obviously didn't put in or list anything- as i am confused per usual lol. i was a tad busy last week, as I am sure we all are. I looked over the ADR bulb site- some stuff i would like was listed as out of stock, and as you said i could not see prices on others and some quantities are high.

I am not finding the list of what others have wanted that we could combine on here on our forum. Is there a thread for that? I do see a few mentions above- is that it?

i usually order from Van Eng and other sites towards the middle of Aug- when is all this supposed to be in?

thanks for the help and sorry for being confused

So far, this thread has not had much activity. I don't know if people are lurking... it's possible everybody is waiting for somebody else to start. Usually, I have 20 different things I'm looking at (or more) to get the ball rolling, but with neither hand working well, I'm trying to limit my fall bulb planting!

Sue, go ahead and let me know what you're interested in, and I'll look up the prices. See if we can get some more folks over here who'd be interested in splitting boxes/bags with you.

"Sold out" on the site does mean unavailable, unless it's something that could be made available from our earlier whole-box group buy.

From that earlier buy, there are a few amaryllises left. I also have some N. Thalia and Muscari armeniacum available at good prices, will check on those actual numbers but at least 150 Thalia and 400 grape hyacinth. Let me do a new post with those...
