Wow.

Really? I'm the first to express my love for moss? Moss is the greatest.
I don't have a "Moss" garden per se. My do, however, do moss no harm. I scrap it off stairways as a safety issue, but that's about it. I've tried various methods to get moss to grow on rocks. Time seems to be the only thing that works.

And you? How is your moss garden?

I read that while there are 2 forms of moss, described by their reproductive form, those forms have preferences as to what they grow on. Moss that grows on dirt generally speaking won't like wood and vice versa. I am planning a moss garden(s) for some deep shade areas and have been pleased to see we have various types on rocks, wood, and dirt. Visually they are not the same up close. I will take some and make the moss milkshake and place it back on a similiar substrate in the garden. I have a sheetrock spraying tool that attaches to an air compressor. It has a large open hopper and a very large orifice for spraying the popcorn type ceiling goo. I think it should work nicely for blended up moss.

My moss grows on dirt, brick, stone, wood. Not too picky about what kind it is. I am experimenting with it as a ground cover between some plants.
I am finding some that is a kind of russet color, and avidly collecting it!

@Dirtmechanic, have you had success with the moss milkshake method? I remember it being a huge rage on pinterest and crafty diy sites a while back, but I never saw any 'after' pictures of the established moss, and I have to say I was a little dubious. Is it a real thing?

Yes it is a real thing. In fact, if you know about it, you will occasionally see pics of moss in really arcane places kept alive with spurts of moisture that just do not occur in nature. Its even a hobby, that wierdly has been made mobile by fans in other countries:

Now when it becomes too much work to maintain? Oh, the thing goes to hell and crabgrass probably.

I recently joined garden.org and have been having a great time reading past forum posts. I live in the VERY mossy PNW and decided this year to turn my lawn into a moss garden. It has never grown anything but whispy grass anyway so why not let it be what it wants to be. Every big storm around here drops branches coated with moss so I go out and collect and fill in all the dead spots. There are 7-8 (at least) different kinds of moss and I think it is absolutely beautiful. We recently had a week of snow and that seems to have taken it a long way to being cemented to the ground. Close up pictures don't seem to capture how pretty it is but if you look at the moss in the foreground you can see my moss patchwork quilt I plan to make a path next spring to help with drainage where you still see dirt.

Lovely nonob! I always wanted a moss lawn but I don't have the right environment and too much creeping grass that never goes away.

Wherever i try to grow moss it dies or is squeezed out by grass. Where it grows by itself it does well. I tried iris and scotch moss on step stones going to stream and replaced it every year. Gave up and put in dwarf mondo grass and dwarf sweet flag. Works better but really wanted moss.

jpm995,

Sometimes what we plant in a certain area doesn't want to corporate..like the moss you planted.
You did the best thing and put in the area what grew best. No hassles…. Hurray! mondo grass and sweet flag always have blooms.
