Care for Nitrile Gloves

By critterologist
April 24, 2012

Nitrile-coated gloves like these Atlas 370 garden gloves go through the wash just fine. They'll be OK in the dryer, too, but they will last longer if you hang them to dry. "Update: An Atlas representative recommends putting their gloves in the dryer to re-activate the slightly "sticky" feel of the nitrile surface."

Thanks for letting us know that these gloves can be put in the washing machine, but I'm not so sure of putting them in the dryer. We want to have these around for a long time so hanging them up to dry is no problem for me. I'm looking forward to receiving my first pair in a few days, then I'm out to wage war against the weeds. Hurray!

I don't send them through the dryer on purpose... but sometimes DH will put a load from the washer into the dryer for me and not see the gloves... so far, they've been fine regardless, but since they dry so quickly when hung up, I don't want to push my luck. Eventually, I wear holes in the fingertips, but I wear them *hard* before that happens... and the rest of the glove lasts longer then the fingertips, no problems with the coating cracking or the fabric getting stretched out.

Wash your garden gloves? Who does that? I guess it must be a gender thing. Rolling my eyes. Shrug!

How do you keep the gross, dirty sock smell out of them?

I've never noticed that they smell like dirty socks. they smell like dirt to me. How many males out there wash their gloves? Please show your hands (gloves). Smiling

I wash mine often because the back area of our yard had poison ivy in it for so long that it will probably always be in the dirt.. and I'm deathly allergic to it.

My gloves have never smelled like dirty socks, though!

You can also wash/rinse off your atlas gloves by rubbing your hands together (still wearing the gloves) under the hose or the faucet... they're lightweight enough that they'll even dry again while you're wearing them.

Can you tell I'm a huge fan of these gloves? LOL

I'm hoping to become a huge fan too. Yes, I think washing garden gloves must be a gender thing, what male would take the time to wash them! Hilarious! I have a bad habit of misplacing gloves so needless to say I have several pair of gloves going at one time. Just can't seem to keep track of them. BTW, is little Miss Sunshine helping you garden this year?

You bet Sunshine Girl is right out there in the midst of things! She has some little gloves that she "must" wear when we go out to do "serious" work. LOL I've got some XS atlas gloves put aside for her. Smiling

I love those gloves too. I have had some for years and throw them in the washing machine. That would be a good idea to rinse. But why do I have more lefts than rights?

LOL... yes, you'd think you could make up mis-matched pairs as they wear out one by one... but I have a lot of extra lefts, too. I don't think it's like socks disappearing into some extra-dimensional pocket of the universe, though. I think the explanation for me is just that I'm right handed.

I started wearing my Atlas gloves and they are great. I hate getting them dirty though. Rolling on the floor laughing
Was in Lowe's the other day and saw a package done up for a Sunshine Girl, cute kneeling pad, pair of small gloves and a small shovel. Oh so cute!!

I remember when I was very young my mother used to crochet a long chain and attached my mittens to it (I lived in the snow country then) that went through the sleeves of my coat so I wouldn't lose them. Guess I may have to do that with my garden gloves too. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Critter, et al.,

I helped out the company that makes the Atlas gloves at the International Master Gardener conference last fall. The guy from Atlas told me that you SHOULD put them in the dryer because it "reactivates" the kind-of stickiness that the nitrile part of the gloves have. Thought I'd let you know!

Susie, thanks for posting... I never would have guessed that!! I noticed a slight stickiness if a glove went through the dryer accidentally, and I thought -- that couldn't be good. LOL

OK, so as far as nitrile coated gloves go...

****NEWS FLASH***

PUT THEM IN THE DRYER!

(I wonder if I can edit my tip? will have to let Trish know...)

Won't the stickyness get smeared on the inside of the dryer? I want someone else totry it first. Rolling on the floor laughing

Thanks, Trish! Tip is edited.

Pegi, I've had these gloves go through the dryer accidentally (usually when DH helps with the laundry), and no harm done. Still, I think I'll keep hanging them up to dry. Smiling

That was my thought, also... that while the nitrile coating might go through the dryer OK, I didn't want the rest of the material to lose its elastic stretch that I like so much!
