Hello everyone ,
Last year in the fall I planted Polar Dusk (Stamille 2010), it was a small single fan.
It went well in the winter and in the spring there was already a scape up.
I even received a re bloom at the end of the summer.
The plant itself remains very small, however, it is planted in very good soil with a lot of compost.
Does anyone here have experience with Polar Dusk that it has small fans ?

Hi Mary,

Now that I am retired, I have a bit more time to work in the garden.

What a special, sweet flower. According to the database, this flower gets 30 inch scapes. Is that what you're getting? I can't tell if it's looking funny with too short foliage, though. It looks good to me.

Mary,
I do not think the scapes have reached 30 inches, maybe next season ...
When I bought Polar Dusk, I thought it would be a pretty sturdy plant, based on the dimensions listed in the database.
Unfortunately, the database only shows the height of scapes and not the size of the foliage.

It may take a years cycle to achieve the foliage size you are looking for. If you are looking to fatten up the plant use a high nitrogen fertilizer like Urea (46-0-0), Ammonia Nitrate (35-0-0), Miracle Gro Miracid (30-10-10), Peters (20-20-20), Scotts lawn food (32-0-4), Scotts Starter (24-25-4). A vast choice of fertilizers but also look into adding micro-nutrients. I am not sure what fertilizers you will have access to. My tip is Time, Water, and Fertilizer.

Hi Mike,

It is not always 100% cleaned up in my garden, the things that they are not allowed to see I leave out of the picture Smiling

Hi Chris,

It might be a good idea to use a fertilizer with a high nitrogen content, currently I am using an organic fertilizer with a 6-4-10 content (intended for general use in the garden), probably the nitrogen content is too low for daylilies.
I will look around if I find something with a high nitrogen content, it will be in any case for the next spring, at the moment I dare not give fertilizers to the plants anymore, autumn is coming quickly here in Belgium, the temperatures are currently still reasonably high but night frost is already on the horizon.

Personally I think the mature fan looks pretty large for a first year blooming plant. Like Chris said, time and fertilizer will make fans larger.

You are right Debra (and Chris), time and fertilizers have to do their job, and the gardener must be patient Smiling
On the same day I planted Polar Dusk, I also planted Boundless Beauty as a single fan, I think it has spoiled me with its enormous growth, currently 4 fans and 3 scapes this season, the last one in September with branching like a tree, I had a picture of this;

That is a great looking plant with super branching, I don't have anything in my garden yet, that looks so tree like!

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the compliment !
The case is now that I do not have so many daylilies in the garden (a dozen)
I can perhaps also give them a bit more attention than someone who has hundreds of daylilies in the garden.
For example, I plant every daylily in a soil mixture of 50% compost and 50% native soil, but mix well because burning the roots is dangerous at this ratio.

I grow Boundless Beauty too, and it has much taller and broader foliage than most of the Floyd Cove pinks. Boundless Beauty really impressed me here this year. Polar Dusk is a beauty. Let us know how it does for you next year.

Ronny07,
If attention in the form of time and effort is what is needed to grow daylilies with tree like branching, then mine should have the branching of oaks and be about as big. Most the plants I own that are registered with good branching are still pretty young, but some have been here a few years and have never approached looking as good as your "Boundless Beauty".

Debra,

I also had the impression that Boundless Beauty is a robust plant, many people also give positive descriptions about BB, I think this is one of the better Stamiles from between 2000 and 2010.
It is nice that BB in your garden in Nashville is doing so well!
About Polar Dusk, I will certainly keep you informed next season.

Larry,

I also find it strange that your efforts are not rewarded with large well-branched scapes.
I see that you are in the same USDA zone as I am, so that will not be the problem.
Which type of soil do you have in the garden? I have a light sandy soil here, but as I said before I mix a lot of compost through the soil.
