We are the Dorothy Strelsin Memorial Community Garden, affectionately known to locals as the Suffolk Street Garden. We began with one man's vision to use an abandoned lot to grow vegetables for his family. After the original caretaker passed away, a team from the BBC America TV program "Ground Force" transformed the vegetable garden into a community space on a series of hot summer afternoons in July 2002. Today the garden is maintained by the New York Restoration Project, who oversees the formal garden at the entrance. Community members plant flowers and vegetables in raised beds in the back of the garden.
