Woke up to thunder and lightening this morning and had to get up to go to Farmers Market. Good thing I packed the truck last night. It let up a bit by the time we got there and there were a fair amount of people but we had four coolers of lettuce and we brought two home. Will have to try and find someone to take some!

I got the cages put around the tomatoes (as many as we had, 30) so some will have to be tied.

Put composted manure around the peppers. Sure hope it gives them a boost, I can barely see some of them.

Pulled the grass from the daffy row to get ready to dig them up so we can use that row for the veggies. I know I'll miss some...

Finally got the peppers planted. Still, some are only inches tall. We're still having cooler weather so I don't know how long before they take off.

Planted celosia seedlings in the garden and put straw mulch around the tomatoes.

Picked more strawberries. After we got home there were a lot that had rotted on the vines but picked them Thurs. and todays batch were really nice.

May 2, 2013 - first strawberries of the season
Posted on May 2, 2013 3:07 PM

I picked about a quart of strawberries today. The birds (or something) have been getting their share so I put up whirlygigs to help scare them away and added row cover to one row.

I am getting ready for a quick trip to Mi. but because I will be gone four days and a lot of my seedlings are still in small containers or paper pots, they need to be watered daily so I have been hauling flats of things over to the farm. Set up on the lawn with a fan sprinkler but hoping it will be overcast and/or rain some while we are gone. Matt has training all week so he will be home every evening and he will check on them, as will Ira.

I put as many into the garden as I possibly could. Today a rack fell over while traveling to the farm. What a mess, but luckily it was mostly extra peppers and I had so many Sweet Pimento Apple ones that I wasn't even upset. Really, other than the tags coming out of some of the peppers, there really weren't too many lost. Just a mess to clean up.

I put my tiny Lisanthus in the garden today as well. Some you could barely see but they had a healty root system, filling the three packs from Bluestone. We'll see how they do. There are a couple of ones from two years ago still living.

I planted more potatoes since some of the Yukon's didn't come up. I had to get Pontiac Reds, they were out of Yukons.
