Big, bold and beautiful. Sunflowers make a grand statement.

Sunflowers attract bees and butterflies to your garden. After the flowers mature, they attract birds, such as goldfinches, which happily feed on the flower heads. Later, leave the dried flower heads for the squirrels to enjoy.

Today there are many annual sunflowers to choose from in striking colors and patterns. There are really tall varieties and miniature ones also. So, there is something that will fit into everyone's garden.

Both the black oil and the larger striped seeds are easy to grow, and sunflowers grow quickly. Here in my zone, seeds can be started anytime up to the middle of July with plenty of time for the plants and seed heads to mature.

Here is a tip: If you don't have a packet of sunflower seeds, simply pick some out of your birdseed mix. That way, your sunflowers will be a happy surprise.
