Catfacing in Tomatoes

Sometimes when we pick a tomato we find an ugly deformation. This is called a "catface" or "catfacing".

Catfacing can make an otherwise beautiful tomato look very unappealing. Some varieties seem to be more susceptible than others. It can be caused by several things, including cool weather when the blossoms are being fertilized, as well as erratic moisture or excessive nitrogen. The good news is that the problem usually is only cosmetic. The deformed section can be cut off and the rest of the tomato can be enjoyed.
