Right from the beginning of the book, you really get the idea that not only does Acadia know what she's talking about, she is passionate about it! This book isn't technical, but also doesn't talk down to readers. Acadia is right there with you, explaining everything, encouraging you, and giving you all the info you need on growing various perennial vegetables. I love that she covers not just the details about varieties but how to grow and harvest each one.

Thumb of 2019-05-08/Trish/1981a2We are thrilled to introduce you to Acadia Tucker and her book Growing Perennial Foods: A field guide to raising resilient herbs, fruits & vegetables. Stone Pier Press asked me if I thought our members would be interested in this new book, and I assured them you would. They sent me a copy to review, and are graciously giving NGA members a 20% off discount by using code NGA20 (only through May 22, 2019) if you order directly from their store at Stone Pier Press ! The book is also available through Amazon, Barnes & noble, and local bookstores.

Right from the beginning of the book, you really get the idea that not only does Acadia know what she's talking about, she is passionate about it! My favorite part, however, is the section on the challenges you might face. As anyone who has ever grown a plant can tell you, one cannot simply plant and expect to have a successful harvest. I found it very refreshing to have an author write about the challenges (pests, diseases, and growing habits). Naturally she covers tips on overcoming anticipated problems.

Acadia starts with the absolute basics of gardening, making even the absolute beginner feel armed and ready to go with useful advice for ultimate success. She then gives growing instructions for 34 perennial herbs, fruits, and vegetables. There are a plethora of recipes at the end so you have ideas on how to utilize your crops as you harvest. At the end of the book is a very thorough question and answer section covering a variety of gardening tips and information. With the style that you've come to expect by the end of the book, all of the answers are very down-to-earth and practical.

Acadia approaches gardening much like we do here at NGA headquarters- organically, and with an eye toward working with nature rather than against it. She teaches us about soil building and regenerative gardening. Reading other articles and hearing other podcasts about her around the web, we are very impressed and excited to see more of her work, and it's coming soon: her next book, due later this year, is Growing Good Food: A citizen's guide to backyard carbon farming.
