I live in zone 8, in WA, and I decided to use raised beds as my soil was very clay-heavy and full of rocks.

I am a first-time gardener and I spent many hours and days of research into growing and planting a variety of vegetables, as well as flowers. I then checked the soil in the two beds already set up here. It was leaning heavily toward the clay side with many little rocks.

I found a wooden frame in the back yard. I cleared a spot in the sun and placed it there. I used some pallets on the ends for my vining plants. I had some extra space, so I took some old pallet boards and made a few more rows. I filled the rows with good soil mix and mixed in some Osmocote as well. I will be planting in it soon. We have had much colder weather here, so cold nights have killed the few plants I have tried to put out there so far.
