Stratification end date: February - March) January 16, 2020: Seeds germinated (My Thuja seeds are alive! Well a couple of them at least. They germinated and their roots are growing. This is from a visual inspection of the seeds that were sown on the surface. I wont transplant them, they look too delicate. Seeds have not been frozen however some people suggest that you have to freeze them solid when it comes to birch seeds. This info comes from OSC seeds for their paper birch seeds, but Mount Royal never says their seeds need to be frozen solid. I went with Mount Royal's advice for the Yellow birch seeds and took OSC's advice when it came for their paper birch seeds. Stratification end date: March 2020 |

| Mountain silverbell (Halesia tetraptera var. monticola) | From January 11, 2020 to January 12, 2020 | Obtained plant Seeds obtained from Mount Royal Seeds. Seeds are currently going through stratification after soaking in water for 24 hours. Stratification is done in moist paper towels and left inside plastic sandwich bag and left in cabinet at room temperature. Seeds need to be left alone in moistened environment (Vermiculite or wet paper towel etc.) for ~90 days Stratification will start in April and will last ~ 90 days in refrigerator, important not to freeze the seeds. These trees are hard to germinate and may take up to 2 years or more to sprout. Don't give up, and never throw away seeds that didn't germinate. Stratification end date: July 2020 (first grow year, tree will survive winter indoor under T5 light to ensure survival. The following year the trees will be allowed to enter dormancy as it is necessary for deciduous trees to go into dormancy to ensure survival. |
| Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) | From January 11, 2020 to January 16, 2020 | Seeds germinated I planted a few seeds in my coco mix (perlite, kelpmeal, bloodmeal, basalt powder, fulvic/humic acid powder, and mycorrhizae) after a few days the seeds finally germinated, I know this quickly, because I always sow some extra seeds on the surface to see if they will crack open before they break the soil. | Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) | On January 4, 2020 | Obtained plant Purple and White varieties. Purple started outdoor in soil spring of 2019, then transplanted in front garden towards mid-late summer. Will update plant status here next spring. White variety started indoors in coco, January 2020 from OSC seeds, and is currently growing in a humidity dome under T5 lights. I plan on moving it to my front garden with the purple variety. |
