This is the most commonly sold cultivar of the hybrid species between the Red x Silver Maples, developing a good red fall color. I have worked at nurseries where it was sold in both Illinois and Pennsylvania. In the Chicago area, the good quality prairie soils usually have surface pH of 6.8 to 7.1, even higher, and so the Red Maple, commonly planted as a good shade tree, maybe about 1/4th of the instances develops magnesium deficiency leading to yellowed foliage because it must have a pH below 7.0. Because Silver Maple is good to about pH 7.3 or some more, the hybrid tree does not develop chlorosis as easily in the area. The hybrid grows faster than the Red Maple and also has stronger wood than the Silver. (The Silver maple is not a recommended shade tree because it is soft wooded, is subject to breakage, and often grows too big. Silver Maple often does not get a really good fall color, though it can be a good golden yellow, even with red and purple spots.)

The addition of larger amounts of nitrogen to the soil will give great results and will diminish the splitting issues with maples attributable to verticillium wilt.
