Aross is a very pretty plant with a nice, graceful growth habit. It fills in quickly and is a very good reproducer.

Super fragrant, and a prolific bloomer but slow grower, which is nice in a way because some Hoyas have to get quite a bit of growth before they bloom.

Susie's pink color fades over the day. It ranges from pink, to pale pink, to almost a tan or cream. - Whatever color she is though, she's pretty, and seems to add fans well in my zone 5.

By OldGardener on Jul 7, 2013 7:58 AM, concerning plant: Five-Leaf Chocolate Vine (Akebia quinata 'Rosea')

Can become invasive in parts of the country - well behaved in others. Fruit is 2-4" long, sausage-shaped, and ripens in September to October. The white pulp with tiny black seeds is said to be quite tasty.

By some reports, may grow up to 20 feet in one season. Climbs by twining.

By farmerdill on Jul 6, 2013 11:26 AM, concerning plant: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Mountain Merit')

A new entry from Randy Garner to the mountain series. Has good resistance to Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus. Also has some resistance to early and late blight. A large-fruited fresh-market variety on large determinate vines. It has held up well here. Not as large as Amelia or Mountain Pride, but productive when exposed to TSWV.

By RickCorey on Jul 5, 2013 4:56 PM, concerning plant: Celtuce (Lactuca sativa var. angustana 'Cracoviensis')

'Cracoviensis' grows fast and may become large, but it bolts very quickly in heat. The leaves don't coarsen and become bitter, though.

The bolting seed stalks are also sweet and edible: raw like celery or peeled and eaten like asparagus (like flowering Bok Choy - Yu Choy Sum).

Leaves are red and green, with a splotch of darker purple in the center of the rosette.

'Cracoviensis' is a "four-season" lettuce - it's very cold-hardy and has over-wintered in NJ and MA.

'Cracoviensis' is a French heirloom. Vilmorin-Andrieux called it a distinct type ("Asparagus Lettuce"), in The Vegetable Garden, (the 1885 edition. not 1981). Vilmorin called it "Red Celtuce"

By farmerdill on Jul 4, 2013 2:03 PM, concerning plant: Patty Pan Squash (Cucurbita pepo 'Early White Bush Scallop')

This is probably the oldest summer squash still grown. Usually just called White Patty Pan, White Scallop, or Ten Toes, it and Wood's Prolific are the only two white scallops that I know about. It is more bland than yellow squash, but good in its class. Productive.

An old timer that is the best flavored of the straight necks. It was my father's favorite. Very productive.

By farmerdill on Jul 4, 2013 1:46 PM, concerning plant: Winter Squash (Cucurbita pepo 'Carnival')

Carnival is a decorative hybrid acorn squash that is semi-vining. It does not take a lot of space and produces multi-colored 1.5-lb fruit. Here green-white predominates, but in cooler climates they also show orange. While advertised as a great flavored acorn type, I found them pretty average in flavor.

By farmerdill on Jul 4, 2013 1:32 PM, concerning plant: Winter Squash (Cucurbita maxima 'Burgess Buttercup')

This is a high quality old timer. Very susceptible to both heat and SVB, so I have not had much luck growing it in Georgia. In the New River Valley of Virginia it was an excellent producer. At that time and place I grew lots of C. maximas including Hubbards, Bananas and Gold Nugget. This was the best tasting.

A small hybrid (1-2 lb) butternut whose biggest claim to fame is its compact bush. A spacesaver.

An excellent middle eastern type hybrid from Hollar. Not as visually appealing as Barq or as productive as Profit but still an excellent zucchini.
