[ Hau Kuahiwi (Hibiscadelphus giffardianus) | Posted on February 15, 2015 ]

Quite notably, the rarest tree on Earth.

It was saved by Ranger W.M. Giffard in the late 1920's from a single dying tree in the wild.

He produced four trees from seed at his country home. From these the National Park Service has produced cuttings and gotten more than a dozen trees cultivated in Kipuka Pua'ulu (Bird Park) & Kipuka Ki in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.

The National Park Service continues to cultivate the tree, keeping it from extinction.

Good choice for those with limited space.

The 'Burgundy' Coffee cultivar is one of the most common Coffee plants grown in Hawai'i.

But to get that heavy production, more than average care has to be given to each plant.

The last natural population of the plant is at Kahuku Ranch, which the National Park Service has recently acquired. The plant is being saved from extinction by being cultivated in favorable habitat in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and at Kulani, on the Island of Hawai'i.
