[ Basil (Ocimum basilicum 'Cardinal') | Posted on November 12, 2023 ]

Purchased this basil for its flowers and was very disappointed:
from six plants not one produced a flower in my zone 5 garden.
I personally consider it not worth the space if not going to flower.

[ Petunia Headlinerâ„¢ Night Sky | Posted on November 12, 2023 ]

I have grown this flower in my garden for several years and have noticed the color pattern seems to change over the season producing larger white spots in the heat of the summer.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Robinson's Heirloom') | Posted on September 25, 2023 ]

My first time growing this tomato
Flavor good but not excellent; also produced less than my other heirloom tomatoes. (brandywine )

[ Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus 'Madame Butterfly Mix') | Posted on June 18, 2023 ]

This is my first time growing this snapdragon and I am very pleased
It makes a nice cutting flower , intense color with tall stems
doesn't really look like a snap, much more elegant /sophisticated bloom
It has earned a place in my garden

[ False Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra Loraine Sunshine) | Posted on March 19, 2023 ]

Reverted to solid green fourth year.

[ Tatarian Aster (Aster tataricus) | Posted on October 19, 2022 ]

This aster is the very last plant to bloom in my zone 5 garden. It continues to bloom till a hard freeze and is much loved by the bees.
Very tall, sometimes over six feet, and needs no staking.
Multiplies nicely but is not a thug.
In China the root is used medicinally.

[ Marigold (Tagetes erecta 'Fireball') | Posted on August 15, 2022 ]

The Name Fireball is misleading.
I must admit I am disappointed in this flower. The deep red color fades to a much paler orange, once mature. Most likely will not buy it again.

However it did perform well, with constant flowers and a nice size throughout the season.

[ Common Lousewort (Pedicularis canadensis) | Posted on May 9, 2022 ]

Interesting plant, a perennial, native to Canada, Mexico, and the US. A hemiparasite, that blooms in April-June, flowers from the bottom up.

[ Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) | Posted on December 23, 2021 ]

Locust trees, including the black locust, make an excellent fence post and in the past were recommended for planting as an income source. The wood is fast growing, nitrogen fixing, and very naturally rot resistant. Reported to give 20-25 years as outdoor posts for burning. The wood has a high BTU and the spring blossoms smell great and are loved by bees.

[ Melon (Cucumis melo 'Ogen') | Posted on September 10, 2021 ]

I grew this melon on a trellis this year and have been very pleased. It is the juiciest melon I have ever eaten. After removing the seeds there is half a cup of juice in the cavity. Hard to describe the taste but very flavorful when fully ripe. Worth the space in my small garden. It earned a thumbs up.

[ Pepper and Salt (Erigenia bulbosa) | Posted on March 26, 2021 ]

This early little flower is often missed, also called pepper and salt because of the flower appearance. This plant is the the only species in the genus Erigenia. In the carrot family. A spring ephemeral native to the north eastern North-America. One of the earliest flowers in the woods here in central Indiana.

[ Hot Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Holy Mole') | Posted on October 30, 2020 ]

I grew this pepper for the first time this year and was very pleased with the vigor, flavor and number of peppers it produced. It has earned a place in my future gardens.
It does get rather large and needs staking or the peppers pull the plant over.

[ Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Quaker Lady') | Posted on May 27, 2020 ]

May be an old-fashioned and less showy bloom, but the soft colors go very well in my garden and it outperforms most of the others, both in flower count and in dividing.
Glad to have this Lady in my garden.

[ Lungwort (Pulmonaria Opal) | Posted on May 23, 2020 ]

Purchased this plant last year, very pleased with the exceptionally long bloom time. Still performing very well after Mrs moon and Silver bouquet have finished.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Red Beefsteak') | Posted on August 19, 2019 ]

Out grew the cage and so many large tomatoes the branches are breaking, had to prune some to save the branches. Largest picked so far 1 pound 6 ounces, picking daily 3-5 large tomatoes in August, one out of every 4 over a pound. Very nice looking, firm, keeping well on the counter, but lacking in taste. I would rate taste average, better than store tomatoes but not up to fresh garden taste.

[ Zinnia 'Swizzle Cherry and Ivory' | Posted on August 12, 2019 ]

My first year with this flower. I will grow it again, very nice in a small vase and lovely in the ground. The flower changes color as it ages into a paler self, very eye-catching in the garden. Blooms constantly even without regular water in the summer heat.

[ Mock Strawberry (Potentilla indica) | Posted on April 30, 2019 ]

Very aggressive grower here in my Indiana garden.
I threw some dirt containing a single plant behind my garden shed 3 years ago. it has covered a 3X8 space almost entirely, surviving among some other weeds and no care.
...so beware
...also I have tasted the fruit(not pleasant)

[ Willow Amsonia (Amsonia tabernaemontana) | Posted on December 11, 2016 ]

A good garden plant for many reasons: blue flowers, fall color, hardy, and care free.
This plant has good germination wintersown.

[ Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum 'Sweet Pickle') | Posted on August 20, 2016 ]

My first year with this pepper. It has been in a pot and has done very well. The colors are a pleasant addition to the table. The fruits are small (3 inches), but very numerous. I am picking 3-4 peppers a week from one plant and there are still many more to come. I have not added fertilizer; just good composted soil. I would grow this pepper again.

[ Yarrow (Achillea millefolium Little Moonshine) | Posted on June 8, 2016 ]

This plant blooms rather early compared to other yarrows. It also will re-bloom if the bloom stalks are cut down after the first flush of blooms.
