I obtained seed from wild growing bulbs collected by Jim & Jenny Archibald in Japan, Honshu, Shizuoka, Tochu River gorge. Sown in January 2007, I recall seeing the first two young leaves emerge around August of that year. By spring 2010 the bulbs were a reasonable size so I potted them into a large pot each, they flowered in August that year!
Winter 2010/11 was extremely harsh in the UK with temperatures at or below freezing for seven weeks, down to -17C. The bulbs were in pots outside, they survived to flower even better this year. They made offset bulbs near the surface this year, I topped up the pots but will repot them next spring. They also made seed this year so will be growing more and hopefully put some in the ground to see how they do there. A very worthwhile Lilium and apparently not very fussy as I have heard they have special needs, I grew them in a free draining gritty 'river soil' with lots of leaf compost with no added food. The scent is gorgeous!
