I'm not sure if black is sometimes mentioned as part of all spectrum colors, but to appreciate and focus on its own stunning color, I'm hoping you all can help by chiming in together on self (solid) cultivars Group hug

Anyone have, or have beheld first-hand, these black beauties?

Don't think I have any true 'black' like an Africa, but do have some that get close

Dominic is darker than photographed here

Killer. Has a definite purple cast, but is nearly "black"

Unfortunately the really dark ones do not grow well for me. I'm on my second plant of LARRY'S OBSESSION and still haven't seen a bloom yet -- but at least it's still alive!

Gorgeous! For anyone with a blooming plant, how does that rich color fare with a long, hot, sun-beaten day? Desert-condition gardeners may be hoping for some colorfast recommendations Big Grin Quote the Raven's going right on my list (parents that together average a resistant score, yummy).

Here is Midnight Magic, clump and single. It has a "velvety" look, I think. A beautiful black-red according to AHS and the darkest registered one we grow. It will need afternoon shade to hold up to excessive heat, and I'm not sure about it even then.

I just LOVE blacks/ near blacks. I have some daylilies, and some iris.

This is my absolute favorite. Large blooms, tall, and bloomed continuously for over 3 weeks this summer during the extreme drought and heat, and no shade (and thrips) Small Carbon Footprint

All mine have afternoon summer shade except for an hour or so between 4:00 and 6:00PM (depending on time of year). Thankfully, ALL of my yard is shaded for good chunks of the day or I wouldn't have much left after the last two years. Sticking tongue out nodding

Some of my most favorite flowers are black, but I don't have any black daylilies. To me, they just aren't black! I think Iris come much closer to a true black, even though many are very dark purple up close. I've got Before the Storm, and it's amazing! I had stunning black Calla Lillies when I lived in CA, but they don't survive here, and I'm not willing to go to the trouble to dig them up. I have a black hollyhock that knocks my socks off! I still don't have any black tulips, but plan on adding some. My neighbor has a bunch, and they really do look totally black.

I would tend to agree with Natalie. I do have several varieties of daylilies that are near black but they all look more red or purple. I have black hollyhocks growing in two different areas and one is black and the other is maroon( I think its from the amount of sun they recieve) . I also have several iris and they tend to be more black, I have Midnight Oil , Black is Black, and Jewel Baby dwarf iris, they are black.

I have an American Revolution, too. Didn't bloom well this year, think it needs a different location. Kind of overshadowed by a rose shrub and some lantana. Love it if it gets that dark next year.

Wow! Midnight Oil is the blackest one I've ever seen! I'd really call that one black. The rest, I'm not so sure of. I know that it's almost impossible to photograph black flowers and have them show up black, but that one worked! Love it!

VICTORIAN GARDEN STAR BRIGHT is one of my all time favorites Lovey dubby Lovey dubby Lovey dubby and one of the darkest daylilies I grow. It holds up very well in the sun and looks about as good at the end of the day as it did in the beginning.

Wowww :} the white/gold edgings on deep purple (and now the coveted green throat Smiling are the ones that i am most drawn to ... and an evergreen that would like milder winters. It has such a diverse and deep pedigree that it would seem like almost anything is possible from it depending on what it crosses with. Thanks for bringing that one to the list!
