Butter Cream is a prized yellow for many reasons. The bloom has a lot of texture, with prominent veining and crimped edges. The color is bright, but softer than a strong or more golden yellow, and with some greenish tones. BC has sometimes been faulted for low bud count. I got 9-10 buds on most scapes this past summer, which is adequate for here (and better than previous seasons).

Some photos show Butter Cream as being lemon yellow, but mine is a softer cream yellow, and one of my favorites. I have had it for at least 10 years or more. It opens well every time, and the big flat flowers last all day without melting. I have to admit that the branching is terrible, with only a split "V" at the very top, and only about 10 buds, but they all come out large and actually for quite a long time considering the low number. It is pod fertile, but not eager to set pods. The plant is firmly dormant and handles the cold without a care, and it does increase very well. I have quite a few seedlings out of it, and I can say that it passes on a lot of the better aspects, as well as hardiness. It makes a great mature clump.

My experience with Butter Cream has been the same as Mantis and Daryll. A good plant, nice shade of yellow, grows well although not a high bud count. Daryll mentioned that it blooms a long time considering the bud count, and I agree with that. I have not been able to set pods on it, and I only keep track of pod parents, not pollen. I do recommend it.

Big beautiful blooms. I wish it was a little taller. Below are images from the past 3 bloom seasons. I wish the bud count was higher, but it blooms over a long period of time, when in clump strength.

Beautiful, and great observations all! Agreed. I love this one!

In 2022, here it bloomed 6/12, instant rebloomed (just as fully as the first round) with a rebloom peak at the end of July, and was still going until early September! It set only a few pods. I have had much better success with pod fertility when it was in a midday shade situation in its former spot, but increase suffered because of the shade. Here's a picture from 7/2/2022, showing an instant rebloom scape towards the front.

It makes stunning children, very dominantly flat and yellow with good substance and texture:

This is my first summer for Butter Cream, so not a lot to report yet. It bloomed from July 1- August 11, with at least 17 blooms but probably more as I was away twice during that time period. It ended the season with three fans.

I love the big flat, clear yellow bloom with the nice greenish middle. Great form and color!
