Hello,

I have recently purchased a home that has a couple beautiful rose bushes, but one of them is very small with only growth at the top. Im afriad the skinny stem holding it up will cause it to lean if it does or is able to grow bigger. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to strenthen the main stem and get regrowth going on it? I have attached a picture for reference. Thank you!!

I have suggested your post be moved to the rose forum where it will get more attention.

Looks like it's a tree rose so that's how it grows.

Thank you! I did not know there was a 'tree' rose. Thanks so much for your help!

Your tree rose is created by grafting a long stem onto hardy rootstock then grafting a rose bush on top of the stem.

Do yourself and the rose a HUGE favor. Get rid of the stone's in that section of the garden. You live in Texas and it gets hot during the summer. The sun will radiate heat off your house and all the stones will collect more heat. You don't want to cook your beautiful rose. Replace all the stones at least 3 ft on each side of the rose with Pine Bark Mulch and keep everything well watered. Your rose will be very happy that way.
It's a rose!!! It has nothing to do with life and death.

I must politely disagree. Mulch is mulch, and that rose is healthy enough to bloom very well. Leave it be except for fertilizing and watering.

Mulch may be mulch, but I don't think of stones as mulch. I agree with Ken that the stones would radiate heat. Think of it this way. If you were to touch a stone sitting in the Texas sun, would it be hot to the touch? Hot enough on some days to fry an egg (or at least make the egg whites turn white)? Perhaps so. Now think about touching a chunk of pine bark mulch, straw, or leaf litter sitting in that same sunlight. Would it feel as hot to the touch as the stone did? Could you fry an egg on it? Probably not.

As for the original question: I recommend getting a plant stake, rod, or dowel and pushing it deep into the ground right beside the rose's main cane. Then tie the stake to the rose cane to help it stand straight and upright. I like to use zip-ties, but you can also use nylon twine or green plant tape.
