I am about to have a space issue next spring. I have started the trek to having many different plants in my beds instead of daylily only. I am buying several short asiatic lilies from dutchman and I'm pondering planting them in between the daylilies. They will have a vertical habit instead of sprawling like the dls.The height of the liles will be anywhere from 10-18 in. Whacha think?

I love the asiatic lilies mixed in with my Daylilies. But many of mine my get much taller than that.

I would think that those lilies would be rather short between daylilies unless they are short daylilies. I have few lilies planted among my daylilies that are much taller 10-18 inches.

This bed is Munson only so the scapes I will have are 18-24 in.. I think they will all have adequate sun, the lilies too.

Then go for it, the only way to find out if it works is to give it a try.

I think it would look fine, but the trouble is down the road, depending on how close together you do put them and how good (or bad in my case) your memory is when it comes time to divide the dl and the foliage on the asiatics has already died back... then you risk whacking into your bulbs w the shovel. I am forever cutting into daffs... then I kick myself because of course I knew they were there... But as long as you leave space or mark them you should be fine.

Like Frillylily said, you just have to remember where you planted them. I have a few glads, heuchera and columbine mixed in between my daylilies and now I am adding a few iris.

@Hemlady Cindy do these plants overwhelm the daylilies? Heuchera and columbine spread and glads are tall. Is your bed fairly newish so the interplanted flowers don't take over? Plus I always thought of heuchera being shade lovers. Do you have pics?
@Frillylily I have Lemon Ball sedum between some of the dls now. Wow what a grower! I just bought it last spring and it's spread between 4 dls already. I pull it away from the base of the daylilies.

I have all of my heuchera in full sun and have never had problems with them. Yes, columbine do spread but after they are done blooming I just cut them back so they really aren't a problem. I don't have too many glads, maybe about 3. I will have to hunt for the pictures, may take awhile.

The heuchera at my place are in morning sun but shade the rest of the day and do great. When I had them in sun they burned up. Kabby, since you are zone 8, your plants may need more sun than the same plant would need in cooler zones. You could probably grow the glads without lifting them in the winter. If our winters here are not too bad the glads return the next year. But once in a while we get a winter colder than normal and the glads would die.

I have been so rigid in keeping my daylily beds ONLY daylilies that I have trouble letting that empty space be filled. As I have pondered what the heck am I going to do with all these bulbs I have ordered, it occurred to me that I have more than one bed I can incorporate them into. I have to be so careful of getting over extended when gardening, where it's not fun anymore, where it's a chore.

Around 20 years ago ( yes, that's correct) I planted hundreds of daffodils and tulips in between clumps of daylilies. Over the years, I've lifted and divided thousands of daffodils, replanted some and given hundreds away, and in recent years, have tossed hundreds - make that thousands, of bulbs. I also planted some Orienpet and Oriental lily bulbs amidst the daylilies. In retrospect, if I could start over, I would still plant daffodils and tulips and lilies, but would NOT put them in between the clumps of daylilies. There's the problem of always hitting the bulbs when you are dividing the daylily clumps and the lily clumps get SO big so quickly. ALL of the bulbs can overtake your daylily clumps in a few years if you're not careful. Over time, I have moved a large number of the Orienpet and Oriental lily bulbs to the rear of the garden but some still remain and they needed moving this past fall ( didn't get it done) and will definitely have to be lifted this fall. Many of the tulips have died out over time. Each year, I try to lift the large clumps of daffodils after they have bloomed. I let them dry and cure in a shady spot, and replant a few of them in the fall. I don't put them back between the daylily clumps but where I can find a spot behind the clumps. I love to see the bulbs in the spring but would do it differently if starting over. The biggest problem I found is that daylily clumps can be left alone for five or six years or some slow growing clumps even longer, but you MUST divide bulbs more frequently or they will multiply rapidly to the point of declining bloom or becoming "grassy" with too much foliage. @floota Julie well pooh. This is good to know before I start on this new venture. I appreciate your input, it will make me slow down and think a little more. Also I always enjoy your blogs. I've been over Judy Davisson cvs since you showed some of them. I have to remind myself of the word downsize regarding daylilies.

I have bulbs between my daylilies. I have lilies and I have spring bulbs such as tulips and daffodils. Works out great.

I have a few TB iris and 3ft lillium between one bed of dls. I like to have early color with the iris the lilium bloom while the dls do. I may put a line of short annuals in front of that mixed bed. I have used marigold but might try begonias.

The marigold look nice up in the Fall till it freezes. I don't think deer like the smell which is a bonus!

The bed below is a mixed bed it has a bit of everything!

I think I'm going to do it. The asiatics are supposed to be short, 2 ft so I think they will fit in nicely until they do the middle age spread. I have a TB iris that is interplanted that has a bud on it RIGHT NOW. Tomorrow it's supposed to be in the 70s and I have to be in town all day long. Only decent temp that I've seen posted that I would be outside comfortably in shirt sleeves.

I certainly hope my bulbs multiply as rapidly as floota's. I would love to have hundreds of daffodils to give away. It is very warm here today I even worked up a sweat. Just weeding and hauling leaves down to the new beds, not much else to do in the garden at the moment. I need to start checking Lowe's and Walmart for new bulbs, I am already beginning to get spring fever. I planted daylilies last year that I have yet to see bloom and can hardly wait till spring. The critters have dug them up and re-arranged them so it should be fun trying to figure out what goes where.

I can't imagine having spring fever in Jan. It would be a long winter indeed! Spring fever here starts in March... but nothing tender is planted out until Mother's Day week-end. I have never planted Lowe's bulbs from spring, only daffodils in the fall which have always been true to name for me. Are the spring bulbs true to name? I know their iris are not and the peony's are pretty iffy too.

I haven't purchased a lot from Lowes but I have gotten 2 types of daffs that were correct and 2 iris.

I definitely have spring fever. I look at my beds every few days to see if I see a little green from fall planted bulbs. In AL we start warming up sporadically in Feb, if I have new daylilies I'll plant the first of April. April is the best month for me all new plants. @Seedfork Seed I want to know what you have planted in the bog. @Newyorkrita Rita a few yrs ago I think I read about you planting a thousand bulbs. Did they come up well and have any diminished over time?
