Palatine will start taking orders for the new season on September 1st. They sell out of some varieties very quickly, so it's best to plan your order in advance.

http://www.palatineroses.com/

I didn't order anything last year and let Halle and Marriotta slip by. I thought they'd be offered again this year, but they aren't.

My tentative order for this year is:

Kordes Herkules
Poseidon
Queen of Hearts
Red Intuition
Souvenir de Baden Baden
Tarde Gris
Zaide

I already have Red Intuition, but I bought it as an own-root band and I just don't trust own-root hybrid teas to exhibit their full potential, so I'll get a grafted one from Palatine. I also have Tarde Gris, but same story: a small own-root sweetie that needs to be replaced with a vigorous grafted one. The rest will be new to my garden. I have a Queen of Hearts, but it's part of the Freelander series and this one's part of the Fairy Tale series.

I want to include a photo in this thread so it will catch people's attention, so I'm including Caramella, which I bought from Palatine five years ago.

I'm confused. They start taking orders Sept 1st, but the first fall shipping date is Nov. 14? Isn't that too late to be planting in most places? Or not? Or will they hold the order and ship in spring?
How big are their roses? Are they better than Pickering? They offer several that I have been wanting but I have learned the hard way that roses won't make it if planted too close to winter or too late in spring. Our temps are STILL over 100, but the roses look better than any other perennial.
Confused

The middle of November is actually the best time to plant bare-root roses here in California. It's the start of our rainy season, which gives them a good start without depending on the gardener to water them every day without fail.

Palatine will hold your order and ship it to you in spring even if you order it now. They will be taking orders again closer to spring, but many of the best varieties will be sold out then, so this is the best time to order, regardless of your preferred shipping date.

Their roses are much better than the roses from Pickering, and I can say that without hesitation even though I'm a big fan of Pickering's roses. Roses from Palatine have longer roots and more of them, and they usually have at least five or six good canes instead of the three or four on Pickering's bare-root roses. If you're accustomed to buying roses from Pickering, you'll be amazed when you see the difference. I think the people at Palatine probably grow their roses in the field longer than Pickering does before digging them up and sending them out.

Cindi - BUY PALATINE! I *LOVE* Palatine roses! Rahel is the NICEST lady, you'll get some AWESOME looking bareroot roses, and the price is EXTREMELY reasonable. Last year I ordered in September & had them hold until April. This year, I'm having them ship in Dec/Jan as I'm doing an indoor grow setting for them. You will NOT be disappointed!!!

Well that's good enough for me! I've got a list ready to go. Thank you so much for reassuring me.
The Pickering roses failed not so much because they were small, which I knew about ahead of time, but because Pickering received more orders than expected and didn't have the staff to send them out quickly. That unfortunately coincided with Kansas having the hottest driest year on record, starting with extreme heat and wind in early May. Shipping from Canada is expensive, but so is driving to any nursery that might have just one of these in stock.
Toni, if Palatine is growing these in fields, do they dig now and keep them in cold storage for you until January?

I'm an unreserved Palatine fan. Their roses have all done well for me - in their first season achieving sizes that most roses from other suppliers do not in their second or third years. The temptation I have to resist this year is to buy one of each. Rolling my eyes.

I don't know how Palatine stores them for the winter, but I have never seen bare root roses look better on arrival or take off faster after good weather starts. I ordered in March and received the roses in early April. I worried that first week of April was too late to plant bare root roses here, but I also watered every day. And they really took off.

---

Today I'm thinking I should buy another South Africa. Or maybe six - one for each lovely bloom it's now showing - the only roses in my garden right now except for some on Hermosa.

Success with Folklore from Palatine has tempted me to try a few more HT's: Alpine Sunset, Ace of Hearts, Berolina, Liebeszauber, Charles de Gaulle, Paradise and Moonstone.

I'm trying to decide whether I have room for a "purple rose" area in which case Geschwindt's Schoenste, would be planted near Lavender Lassie and the last three HT's listed above would be nearby.

Having trouble resisting Ascot, Pomponella Fairy Tale, and Elegant Fairy Tale, though I'm not sure where I'd squeeze them into the garden. I love the photos of Carmella Fairy Tale, but am not sure I know how to work it into the garden.

Silver artemisia look like they need the company of roses with dark red flowers and I am trying to choose between Europeana and Lavaglut. My one Europeana, believed to be dead, appears to be recovering.

I really need to find a place for Queen Elizabeth so that there is a rose with DW's name on growing in the garden. And then there's a list of climbers that I'm looking at: Jasmina, Harlekin, Pele, Rosarium Utersen, Rosanna, Joseph's Coat, and Dublin Bay.
When you dance with nature, try not to step on her toes.

http://www.helpmefind.com/rose...

I am so tempted by several others in the Fairy Tale series and also South Africa but I am heading to Regans this weekend for their annual 1/2 sale and have to see what I need of my current wish list.

Steve, I have a tall artemesia in front of Dublin Bay and it is a wonderful combination. my Rosarium Utersen has silver mound artemesia in the same bed and they are good partners also. Amazingly, supervista bubblegum petunias hold up well in the heat and they fill in nicely around bare rose legs.
I bought both Dublin Bay and Rosarium (sold as Seminole Wind) from Chamblees. No need to coddle those roses. I have a couple of the Fairytale roses growing with tiny SDB iris. Those roses have bloomed the entire summer, and because I was afraid of rotting the iris, I didn't water that area much.
I think you should just go ahead and order one of each. Big Grin But wait until Friday, let me get my little order in first. Whistling

Did you notice that all three of us ordered Red Intuition? It might be sold out before morning. I'm glad I placed the order now.

That's why I did the order NOW... I was afraid that Red Intuition & Summer Song was going to be sold out like Summer Song has been sold out for the past few years. So, I took advantage of the time difference to get in uber early. LOL

I'm always out of step. I suppose I'll find myself ordering March 15th again, too.

I have grown Ghislaine de Feligonde and I was very happy with the way it worked as a vase-shaped shrub.

Cindi, thanks for the tip on Dublin Bay and Rosarium Utersen.

Steve, as usual, I'm late to the party, so don't think you're the only one.
If the confirmation indicates the roses ordered are still in stock, then woo hoo! I finally got a Red Intuition! Yay! Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!
Last year I bid on that one at the rose district convention and finally gave up when it hit $75. A friend of mine won it, and she told me this summer that it didn't make it through the winter. Dang. Couldn't even go beg cuttings.
I ordered enough to make the shipping worthwhile, and there's still more I wish I had ordered. It would have been nice to just order one of everything. I already have 30 or so from their catalog, and they are some of my best growers. Kordes, Meilland, and Austin roses all do well here. Lovey dubby
