Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Evening Enchantment')

Vivid purple with large contrasting throat. Reliable evergreen here. Would prefer it to be a few inches taller.

This is probably a good solid daylily in places with cooler summers then mine. I was trialing it against Bela Lugosi to see how it performed in our area and there really wasn't much difference in heat tolerance between Evening Enchantment and Bela Lugosi. The first picture below is Evening Enchantment as it looked at 8 in the evening in a temperature of 99 degrees. It is located in an area that is protected from late afternoon sun, so has not been out in the open all day. I'm sure it would have looked worse with all day direct exposure. As you can see the petals have lost color in some areas. I've also included a picture of Bela Lugosi on the same day, grown in similar circumstances. As you can see the petals on Bela also are having problems. In my situation Bela remains mainly because it has larger blooms. .....Maryl

Bela Lugosi:

Bela Lugosi is to my mind a superior cultivar, more vigorous, larger, taller. It is very difficult to find purples that could be called "sunfast," though some are clearly worse than others. Your conditions are especially demanding.

I love Evening Enchantment, even though it is a bit smaller & shorter than Bela Lugosi, not significantly so. something about the shape of the blooms really appeals to me. Evening Enchantment starts blooming a week or so before Bela, although they seem to finish about the same time. I have thought about getting rid of one of them, but just like them both so much can't seem to do it.
