Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Stella de Oro')

Stella would not grow here!

My very first daylily. When we sold our last horse, part of the pasture became our yard. Part of that was a 45 degree slope, that I knew my husband was going to kill himself trying to mow. Being quite fond of him, I started a garden there. Bought hundreds of Stella and Pardon Me from Smokey's Daylilies. That was the most economical route at the time. And they grew, and were beautiful. They stopped the soil erosion and blocked the weeds, didn't mind clay or rocky soil, kept my husband from rolling his Cub Cadet, and sure looked pretty from the porch. 2015 we dug up and gave away the majority of them. I still have both tucked here and there, but now I'm eager to try others. Stella's only drawback, as far as I can see, is the amount of dividing I found necessary to keep them healthy and blooming. I love the color and in a large garden it holds it's own. I'll always have both Stella and Pardon Me. Picture is of the beginning of the mass Daylily exodus of 2015. I now have many new ones on the way.

I bough a bunch of fans about 5 years ago and got some extras from my father in law and planted them in a row out in my field. I watered them their first year in the ground, and not since! Nor have I fertilized. I don't dead head/ clean up spent scapes or pull off bee pods. I do yank up the grass that infiltrates their space- twice a year if they're lucky.

They bloom and rebloom til fall. They're always a cheery sight with their golden flowers. There's a reason Stellas are grown In landscape applications- they're not needy, they're hearty, they multiply and they're pretty, plus they are fragrant. I need to divide mine this year and look forward to making the row wider and longer.

Stella blooms over and over again; definitely one of the best performing daylilies. I have them planted around a Rosy Glow barberry and the colors are nice together. My only complaint is that they are used so much in commercial settings that they have become too commonplace.

Oh little Stella de Oro, she's a faithful a CV I've ever seen. Dormant but returning every year so far.
Have a clump that I started with back in '02.
It was grown in Panama City FL moved to GA and then Back to FL again. Moved it twice since and has thrived. I believe you can throw this one on top of the ground and it would live.

Short scape's, small face but a beautiful yellow that just seems to bloom and bloom for weeks.

Took the bellow picture today to share, she's back for another season. If it ever fade, I'll buy more and will never be without this one in my landscape.

Stan that is very encouraging, you are so close to me if you grow it there, it should certainly grow here. I may have to retry it. I just have had no luck. I have been given it a couple of times and it never even bloomed.

Stella de Oro is always the first daylily to bloom in my zone 6b garden, adding bright lights wherever it grows. It blooms and reblooms (after a rest) from early to late in the season, year after year, without special care, e.g., watering. I live on top of a windy, drought-prone hill where water must be rationed, so I don't water Stella de Oro. I haven't done much fertilizing or dividing because I don't have places for the divisions.

The foliage is always very nice until after the first bloom cycle. Then it tends to turn brown and thin out. Subsequent scapes are shorter, less plentiful and less robust, but they do continue intermittently all season.

I use Stella de Oro to edge gardens, prevent erosion on slopes, and fill empty spaces in the garden that need a bit of brightness.

When you tried Stella, what did it do, how did it grow? How high do the temperatures reach where you were growing it? How often and deeply was it watered? Mulched? Afternoon shade?

I have had the plants for several years now, so they have been though lots of temperature changes(as low as the teens and up above 100) with normal highs in the mid to upper 90's. Stella seldom got watered, but was mulched. The shade increasingly got darker until this past winter when I cut down a row of cedar trees. Now the spot should receive much more sun. I actually looked out the window just now and I can see several daylilies waking up, some of them possibly could still be Stella de Oro. With the trees cut and more sun, I will wait and see what blooms this year.

Unfortunately, some daylilies are unlikely to do well when grown at high temperatures. A researcher found that 85F and 95F continuously were too high for good growth of a daylily, 'Purity'. Many of the flowers were blasted at 85F and no plant grown at 95F flowered. Plants at both temperatures grew poorly.

When days are very hot (for daylilies) how well they survive and flower may depend on how cool the nights are, for how long the days are hot, on how deep their roots are, how well they are able to use water, etc.

To grow Stella successfully in hot summer southern gardens may require trying different spots and growing conditions in your location.

Stella de Oro is one constant that I can depend on in the garden. This plant continues to perform year after year with hardly any maintenance or special attention.
To describe it I'd call it 'one tough little daylily'.

I have three clumps of Stella De Oro, two of which is in shade most of the day. They still performed ok.

I bought my first daylily many years ago - I'd guess it's been more than 20 years since I planted Stella D'Oro, and with no fuss and minimal water it continues to produce its golden blooms year after year. No disease, and came through the California drought like a champ. It gets partial sun.

It thrives here, too. I can't count the number of times I have divided it. I will have to divide my clumps again this year. It is tough, reliably hardy, blooms like crazy and reblooms.

I love Stella, it's always the first to bloom, it increases fast and it's very strong. I divided the clump and changed its position in the garden but it started to grow again immediately. I wish every CV could have its characteristics.

I have had Stella for over 10 years and it is one of the earliest bloomers besides Happy Returns. Stella is a wonderful bloomer and I have not babied it at all. It is in a spot where my garden hose does not reach so it probably does not get the necessary water a plant should need and yet it does great. I have only divided it about 3 times in that time period. Although it is a great plant, I do prefer Happy Returns as it seems to have a lot more scapes on it than Stella.

I have had Stella for years, I've tried to give it all away, but I seem to find a bit of it surviving still. It is a good bloomer for me if I keep it divided, but I've gotten to an age I prefer the slower multipliers. I actually prefer Happy Returns too, it provides more scapes & doesn't require the regular division.

I always wonder if the daylily that was sold to me was really Stella de Oro as it just did not live up to how it should have shown off and was removed after a number of years.
