Hi Jo Ann . I also do large pots / planters, too. Some, I mix a few different varieties, together & others I like to keep uniformity, by planting mainly just one species. I try to mix up my soil, so it is well draining, but moisture retentive. I may do early flowering annuals, mixed with perennials... But later, remove the spring flowering sorts & replant, with warmer season annuals, once it is warm enough for those.
Summer will be 'Double Click' Cosmos, 'Zinderella' or 'Scabious' flowered Zinnias & 'Mission' Marigolds, that resemble 'mums somewhat.
Speaking of Chrysanthemums, I almost forgot about my order of rooted 'Fuji' style cuttings, from King's Mums, but those are likely sold out, by now. Those will be near the back porch, to avoid risking temptation, by others, while in full bloom ! ( Security cameras doesn't actually stop all theft, but is a nice deterrent.)
Need to transplant really soon, some 'Amazing Grey' & 'Supreme' ( Fleuroselect Novelty) Papaver rhoeas varieties. The former for the very unusual color & the latter, due to larger than usual, double flowers about twice the regular sized bloom. Only just over a few more months to go, before they start flowering. I almost can't wait ! The "perfect day" is today, with this drizzle, but not my idea of a pleasant day to get the job done !
I should have got a packet of Coleus, to start & later pot up (in afternoon shade), near the front entry, for some extra color. Guess I will have to get a pkt. before I forget.
Around here, people especially like that lime green leaved vine like Ipomoea, in planters...
