Hi SW Gardeners,

I have a north facing area under a window that needs something. It only gets 4-5 hrs of morning sun. It is near our AC unit, so I am hoping to put something there without spines. Needless to say, it will also have to handle the winter chill. Water is nearby. Any ideas? I was wondering if artichoke or bear's breeches would be a good solution.

Thank you. Stay dirty, my friends.

I've had some similar situations here in Tx and if there's a drip from the a/c you can get away with growing a lot of plants that wouldn't do well anywhere else. I've grown Hall's Honeysuckle, Daylilies, Iris, Nandinas, Boxwoods, and have some American Beauty Berries with less than 5-6 hrs of sun and no extra watering so they almost take care of themselves. Asparagus would probably work too if you wanted an edible.

Hi Ivan,

Thank you so much, our AC it on that wall. I never thought about using the water from the AC. Grand idea. Hurray!

I really appreciate the response.

I had a nasturtium planted last year where my AC water dripped. That plant grew so well with absolutely no care. I think a Canna would do well too.
