So part of the subdivision lost power earlier today when I was at work. Not us for once!!!! Power came back on before I got home. Now there's three utility trucks, two huge ones, parked in front of our house. They are in the neighbor's yard. A bucket truck, a pole truck and a regular service truck. All our lines are underground. Lots noises and I can't see what they are doing in the neighbor's yard. This doesn't sound good...

Lol. I think we may be in the clear. The big trucks left a little while ago.

Thommes, we were without power two years ago for close to four days and unfortunately it was during one of the hottest spells we'd had in summer. What was odd about it was as the time wore on more and more neighbors started coming out and talking to one another. More people spent more and more time outside during the evening hours as well. My husband and I are like that anyway, since we've worked so hard on our making our yard beautiful, we want to be out in it... but our neighbors are pretty scarce come summer.

Sadly, when the power came back on all retreated into their homes and the "Andy Griffith Show" feeling was gone.

@AponiDena - a raw sewage backup was responsible for me meeting my neighbors - while the hazmat people cleaned up our condos we sat outside and met each other - I guess there really is a silver lining to every "storm".

Same happened to us during a hail storm a number of years ago. Our subdivision has a pretty active Facebook group so it's not terrible, but the new houses behind us are in a different subdivision and its like our subdivision is from the wrong side of the tracks. The guy immediately behind us, well I was out gardening for 30 minutes. He came out at some point, hung up a hammock and then proceeded to read. I was shocked when I turned around as I didn't know he was there. The next time I saw him, I introduced myself and chit chatted with him. That was the last time we talked and a 6' fence went up three months later. Guess who isn't getting garden produce.

Technology, while intrinsically, is a good thing, too much of it seems to be stifling the world's communication skills. (She said on another technological device Grumbling )

One sec... I need to put what you said through Google translation service to understand what you meant. OH... now I get it.

I sort of agree. My son is living in a very different world than I did. I lost track of several friends throughout my life. Electronic communication makes keeping in touch a bit easier. I took my son a couple states away to buy him his first car. While we were there he said can we drive another 90 minutes to visit one of his online friends that he's 'known' for the last 6 years. LOL. So not only does it make communication a bit easier at times, electronic communication also makes it possible for well everyone in this forum to connect. I've been concerned that e-com was making my son less involved in person and talked to his teachers about it. They assured me that he interpersonal skills were fine. I do see more online interaction than real life interaction but who's to say that I wouldn't have been the same. Will be interesting to see how his generation ages.

Here in MN they no longer teach cursive at certain schools. Young kids don't know how to sign contracts any longer and are now making an X. Sorry, I don't see very much in the line of positive when it comes to too much phone time and I never will.

Cursive is an elective in elementary schools here. Hand writing is what e-comm is really killing. My son's hand writing is atrocious. I was actually shocked a number of years ago when my son told me that he was happy I grounded him from all screens for 2 weeks. He forgot the other things he used to do. In his defense, he doesn't just play games on his computer. He codes, composes music, a lot of good things.

They don't teach hand writing in my area either any more. Hard to imagine that.

My nephew learns cursive in school now. They took it away and brought it back this year he said. He's happy to learn it and if I remember right he said he doesn't have trouble doing it so much but has trouble reading it but he's working on it.

Yeah my son can't read cursive either. However, not sure anyone could read MY cursive and I'm sorry to say I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on tv.

Hmmm - won't be long before cursive becomes a sister to hieroglyphics??

I'd go farther and say all hand writing. My son's handwriting looks like something from a second or third grader BECAUSE... he hasn't had to write anything since second or third grade. Everything is tablets now and online.
