I just want to remind people out there that there are unscrupulous people who call you & try to scam you. Don't fall for it.
This evening I got a phone call, a # I don't recognize, answered & a recorded message in a male voice began talking. The voice said something pretty close to this one in this news report:
http://www.cleveland19.com/201...

It told me that there had been a fraudulent claim flagged on my SS# & that's why they were suspending my #. It directed me to call the same # showing on my caller ID & called it out by #'s - 201-884-2681
It said it was urgent & I was to call right away!

I knew the whole thing was a scam so I did not call the #. I did make a report to SS OIG, as well as the FTC. I also blocked the #.

I don't know if this was just random that I got this call but it was really weird since I did, just days ago, file a claim with SS.

If I don't recognize a number, I don't answer. If it's a call that is legit, they will leave a message.

When you pick up the phone and it notes that you "exist", they can notify robo-callers that your number is an active telephone number that can be sold to other telemarketers for a higher price. This then leads to more unwanted calls.

I have been getting quite a few on the landline that show on the caller ID as people/numbers that I know and they are junk calls. HOW do they get legitimate numbers and be able to do this? Just last week I had someone call me that said she had a missed call that was from my cell number and was returning it. Told her about the scam/junk calls and that was probably the case with that.

Part of the scam, setting up fake caller ID's, even from local legitimate business' or from your area code so you think it may be someone you know. I keep getting them on my cell phone with the same first 3 digits of my number.

Same here. On both cell and landline.

I get 3 to 10 nuisance calls (of various kinds) per day on my landline. I never answer the phone anymore.

I ditched the landline, only have a cell now & immediately put the # on the Do Not Call List. Once in a while I get the occasional robo call. I immediately block that #.
