HELLOOOO Container Forum.

I'm mostly new to containering. I've had hanging pots and whisky barrels before but I want to grow squashies in containers. Without consulting the lot of you, I bought some fabric type containers. The stated size is something like 21"x14" the 14" is the depth. Comments say that water flows through the material so I don't have to worry about drainage.

Here's my plan. I love shredded leaves. I love leaf mold. I'm thinking that I would put many inches of shredded leaves in the bottom of the containers making sure the leaves are wet. I'd fill the rest of the container with a growing medium. Hoping the shredded leaves would help maintain moisture in the soil. Bonus is that at the end of the season I might have partially decomposed leaf mold.

Anyone see an issue with this plan? How much soil would be recommended for planting squashies?

I wouldn't add anything to the bottom of the pot that's not fully composted! The un-composted plant material produces heat as well as tie-ing up the nitrogen. Also mold can be a problem!
NOT A EXPERT! Just a grow worm! I never met a plant I didn’t love.✌

I don't remember what I ended up doing. oh I do. I put in several inches of straw. The plants were doing wonderfully until they were eaten by groundhogs. I'm going to be doing garden aka groundhog restaurant, clean up this weekend. I'll dump one of the containers to see what happened with the straw.
